Throughout the week, our students embodied the spirit of compassion and community, making the birthday celebrations truly meaningful. Their dedication to giving back left a lasting impression on those they served and made this special milestone even more memorable.
This term has been nothing short of delightful, filled with exciting activities and significant growth for our girls. Watching their skills develop has been a joy as they eagerly embrace each opportunity with enthusiasm, and we’ve seen their confidence soar.
Our Term 3 journey began with a Winter Theme, and the weather certainly set the scene. The girls engaged in lively discussions about winter and seasonal changes, with their creative art projects beautifully capturing the season’s essence.
Next, we moved on to our Body Theme, always a firm favourite. The girls learn so much about body image and physical awareness. Although the rainy days meant we had to skip the much-anticipated activity of drawing and decorating life-sized versions of themselves, it’s something to look forward to in Term 4.
Our exploration continued with the 5 Senses Theme, an interactive and engaging part of the term. We dived into each sense with hands-on activities, and we’re grateful to the parents who contributed fascinating items for the girls to explore, discuss, and taste.
To wrap up the term, we embraced our Proudly South African Theme. The girls delved into learning about the South African flag, along with the national plants and animals that represent our beautiful country.
As always, we are so proud of the girls and the enthusiasm they bring to every aspect of their learning. Term 4 is shaping up to be just as exciting, and we can’t wait to continue this wonderful journey with them.
Our school was buzzing with creativity as students’ amazing artwork filled the hall for the Micklefield Art Exhibition. From 3rd to 6th September, everyone had a chance to see the beautiful and imaginative pieces the learners created, showing off their hard work and talent.
Visitors loved seeing the different kinds of art, each one telling its own special story. We’re so proud of all our young artists for putting their hearts into their work, and we want to thank everyone who came to support the exhibition.
We would also like to say a special thank you to Mrs Schutz for all her hard work in putting this Art Exhibition together.
This term, our Grade 0s have been immersed in a world of learning, where we’ve focused on developing their thinking and reasoning skills. One of the highlights was learning to categorise by comparing similarities and differences – an essential skill at this stage. Our Bears Theme provided the perfect platform to practise, with the girls exploring well-known bear stories before ending the theme with our beloved annual bear hunt and teddy bears’ picnic.
Next, we dived into the world of Day and Night, Light and Dark, which introduced the girls to an exciting new vocabulary. Words like twilight, dusk, dawn, and noon became part of their daily conversations. Using thinking maps, they sorted photographs, searching for clues to determine the time of day they were taken. As the sun shifted across the sky, the girls were fascinated by the changing shapes of their shadows, and they had so much fun tracing a friend’s shadow and building shadow pictures using blocks.
Our Fruit and Vegetables Theme brought out the inner adventurers in the girls, encouraging them to try new tastes. Through hands-on activities like counting peas and learning the difference between fruits and vegetables, maths became an exciting, sensory experience. Watching them confidently count “five plump peas in a peapod pressed” made us all smile!
Our term ended with the Proudly South African Theme. We explored everything from South African money and homes to languages, animals, and the rich diversity of our cultures. Heritage Day was a true celebration, filled with traditional face painting, milk tart baking, braaing, and, of course, plenty of dress-up fun!
Our Think Equal programme focused on emotional well-being this term, teaching the girls how to use their senses to calm themselves when feeling worried or anxious. We also opened up discussions about those days when emotions are mixed up and hard to manage. Whether through speaking to someone they trust or simply having a good cry, the girls are learning that all feelings are real, valid, and a normal part of life.
It’s been a busy, beautiful term of growth, and we can’t wait to see what next term holds.
A much-anticipated highlight of the term was our be.UP Park outing, which continues to be a firm favourite. The girls enjoyed building friendships in this new environment, where a little peer pressure helped encourage healthy risk-taking as they tackled new challenges together.
A major highlight was the Rosen Castle Outing. For many of the girls, it was a nostalgic return, as they last visited Rosen Castle in Grade 0. The excitement was palpable as they explored various “companies” within the activity centre, including Capitec, Checkers, Kitchen Corner, Medi Rite, and a television studio. The girls had a blast shopping at Checkers, baking at Kitchen Corner, and even becoming TV weather reporters! This magical space provided a fun and educational experience that the girls embraced with enthusiasm.
Our Grade 3 students embarked on a thrilling educational adventure to the Cape Town Science Centre this term. The outing was filled with interactive exhibits and hands-on experiments that sparked curiosity and enthusiasm in every child. From fascinating displays to practical experiments, the visit provided a dynamic learning experience that complemented their classroom studies.
The trip was a fantastic way to bring science to life, and the students returned with a renewed interest in the subject, eager to share their newfound knowledge and excitement with their peers. It was a day of discovery and wonder that highlighted the joys of learning through exploration.
To celebrate the end of a long and busy term, our Grade 5s enjoyed a fun-filled outing to the Scratch Patch and Cave Golf. The girls let their hair down as they collected colourful gems at the Scratch Patch and played a few rounds of cave golf. Afterward they treated themselves to a well-deserved sweet treat at the V&A Waterfront—a perfect way to unwind after a term of hard work.
To cap off a busy term, our Grade 6 girls enjoyed an exciting outing to Art Jam at the V&A Waterfront. The girls had the chance to unleash their artistic talents in a fun, vibrant atmosphere, painting their unique Mona Lisa masterpieces. It was a well-deserved creative break that everyone thoroughly enjoyed, allowing them to relax and express themselves after a term full of hard work. What a colourful way to end the term.
This term, our Grade 1 girls took on the exciting challenge of learning about 3D shapes in Maths. Through hands-on activities, they worked in pairs to create their own 3D shapes using cardboard pieces and elastic bands. It was wonderful to see how they embraced teamwork and perseverance, working together to overcome challenges. Well done, girls—you did it.
We also had a delightful Little Chef Activity Day, where the girls’ creativity truly shone. They made vibrant and tasty fruit skewers, and their gingerbread men, decorated with colourful designs, came to life with imagination. I was so impressed by their creativity and enthusiasm throughout the day.
It has been a term filled with fun, learning, and creativity, and we couldn’t be prouder of the Grade 1s.

Both the Grade 3s and 2s presented a drama at their Open Days which the parents enjoyed.
In addition, seven of our senior girls have been diligently preparing for their Trinity College Speech and Drama Practical Exams, which take place early next term. We wish them the best of luck as they continue their preparations.
Our extra-mural drama girls had a fun and productive term as well, working with short scripts from plays like The Snow Queen and The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. These activities helped sharpen their stage presence and characterisation skills, building confidence for future performances.
It’s been a term filled with creativity, learning, and growth, and we look forward to even more exciting performances next term.
This term, our Grade 2 girls embarked on exciting journeys of discovery through the themes of Around the World and Transport. Each girl had the chance to research a different country, delving into its history, culture, and landmarks. Their unique presentations were a beautiful blend of technology, creativity, and global learning. We’re incredibly proud of the hard work they put into these impressive projects!
Our Foundation Phase PJ Day & Storytelling event was another favourite! The girls arrived in their cozy pyjamas, ready for a day filled with fun and imagination. The storytelling session, led by the enchanting Gilly Southwood, brought smiles all around as she captivated the girls with her expressive style, making the day even more memorable.
The term concluded with our Grade 2 Open Day, where parents and families were treated to a showcase of the girls’ incredible progress. The hall and classrooms were buzzing with excitement and pride as the girls displayed their work, including a wonderful exhibition of the school’s artwork. It was a fantastic celebration of all the learning, creativity, and hard work that defined this term.

The highlight of the course was undoubtedly practicing CPR on teddies and dummies—a fun and practical way to reinforce their learning. It was an excellent experience that equipped the girls with essential life skills.
In addition to their medical training, the Grade 4s worked diligently on their Project-Based Learning (PBL) project focused on The Titanic. Each girl explored different aspects of the famous ship’s history and created impressive presentations. The culmination of their hard work was presenting their projects to their parents, where they showcased their knowledge and creativity with pride.
We set sail for a magical night on the Titanic!
Parents and girls arrived dressed to the nines, walking down the red carpet with excitement. The girls were eager to showcase everything they had learned and created throughout the term.
From hidden facts in passenger portholes and inventions to improve life aboard the Titanic, to nautical poems and meeting two passengers in the classroom, the evening was full of interactive fun. Robots navigated their courses (with a few crashes), and papier-mâché boats floated while the foyer came alive with black-and-white Titanic-themed photos featuring the girls. It was a beautiful display of teamwork and perseverance that everyone thoroughly enjoyed.
Well done to our Grade 4s for a term filled with learning, growth, and memorable experiences.
This term has been filled with musical excitement and accomplishments, with our girls showcasing their talents on various prestigious platforms.
We had a record number of entries for the KAE this year, and Micklefield was proud to host the Recorder Section in our beautiful school hall. Our Strings (Violin and Cello), Piano, Guitar, and Vocal students performed across different venues, and our Senior Choir impressed with their stunning harmonies. The positive feedback from all adjudicators was heartwarming, and the experience of performing in front of an audience was invaluable for all our musicians.
Our two talented flautists, Alexa Burns and Sophie Fyvie, performed solos and a duet, earning the highest praise from the adjudicator, who awarded them three Diplomas – the highest accolade in their categories. A number of our piano students also participated and achieved wonderful results.
A massive bravo to our performers who took part in Shocking Pink at the Masque Theatre, excelling as solo vocalists, dancers, and members of the Shocking Pink ensemble. The show, “We Are the World,” was a beautiful showcase of songs and dances from around the globe. Sharing the stage with internationally acclaimed jazz vocalist and former Micklefield Shocking Pink director, Nomfundo Xaluva-Jantjies, along with LAMTA singers and Daphne Jubber’s dancers, was an incredible experience for our girls. The full theatre experience – from lights and sound to the dedicated backstage crew – made this a truly unforgettable performance. Bravo to all involved.
Our Grade 2 and 3 Junior Choir has been winning hearts with their beautiful performances. From the Grades 2 and 3 Open Days to the Foundation Phase Conference, their fine singing, actions, and instrumental accompaniments were a true delight. What a treat it’s been to watch them shine.
Our Grade 1 girls have begun group recorder lessons with Mrs Fyvie, Mr Vavatzanidis, Ms Viljoen, and Mrs Smith. This lively group is already showing great promise, and we are excited to see how their musical journey unfolds.

Well done on a great term or work.
Our Grade 6 and Grade 7 teams had an exciting and successful experience at the Pinehurst Term 3 Lit Quiz. Competing against strong opponents, both teams performed admirably, scoring full points in several of the 16 challenging categories.
One of the standout moments was in the Roald Dahl category, where our teams even knew why 13 September is significant for Roald Dahl — it was his birthday.
Congratulations to our brilliant readers for their hard work and dedication. They have truly made us proud.
The Robin’s house captains hosted a Mismatch Civvies Day on the 6th of September. This was a fun way to raise funds for the end of year gift to the school. This civvies day was to embrace everyone’s wacky, crazy dressing styles and to showcase everyone’s creative side. If I have to elaborate, mismatched is wearing different coloured socks, the use of different shoes, weird coloured clothes and whatever catches one’s attention.
This term the Kingfisher house captains held a Pyjama Day to raise money for our end of year gift to the school. Grades 4 to 7 turned up to school in comfy, funky and even matching pyjamas. There was also a lot of enthusiasm and excitement throughout the day. We raised lots of money and are very proud of our results
On 8 August, the Outreach Committee brought a touch of magic to the Brown & Annie Lawrence Retirement Home with a delightful Vintage Winter Tea Time Surprise. This special event aimed to honour the wisdom and life experience of the residents.
The day began with performances from our Shocking Pink ensemble, who dazzled with three songs, including an acapella piece. Highlights included Beatrix Bryan and Mohini Naidoo’s violin and cello duet, a vocals and keys duet by Ava Klerk and Ava Brotchie, and heartfelt performances by Lise Muller and Leilah Joseph.
Following the music, we treated the residents to a selection of delicious scones, savoury platters, and koeksisters, accompanied by tea and engaging conversations. The event concluded with the presentation of mini flower bouquets, adding a personal touch to our visit.
The event was a resounding success, creating meaningful connections and spreading Micklefield Magic through smiles and rose bouquets.
This term, Micklefield hosted the Mini Olympics inspired by the Olympics that were being held in France. It was a fun filled day where we came together in our family groups and were each given a country to represent. We all came dressed up in clothes that represented our country’s flag. There were a lot of activities such as hurdles, shot put, bicycle racing, javelin, archery and guess the sport. It was an extremely fun experience where we got to bond with our family groups and had to work as a team.
This term, our Grade 7 class had a fantastic outing to the Ysterplaat Building Centre with Mary Quinn. We visited to get ideas for our eco home PBL project, and it was incredibly helpful.
At the centre, we learned all about how to build sustainable homes. We explored a model eco home and discovered cool features like energy-saving materials, shading, water conservation, and how to keep homes cool or warm efficiently.
The visit had two parts: first, Mary showed us around the model home, and then Jo answered our questions and gave us an online tour of the Greenpoint Park Eco Home.
The best part of the trip was when we ended up at Vida. We had a blast singing, ordering our food, and making the staff smile.
We came back with tons of new ideas and can’t wait to use what we learned in our own eco home designs.
As part of our PBL project this term, we were challenged to design eco-friendly homes. To help guide us, Mary Quinn, an Eco Home Specialist and Micklefield parent, gave an insightful talk on the key aspects of creating sustainable houses. She explained how climate, seasons, and house orientation impact energy use, and highlighted the importance of features like shading, insulation, and eco-friendly materials.
We learned about sustainable energy sources and water-saving strategies, all of which helped shape our eco-home designs. One standout point was the significance of house orientation—north-facing rooms, such as bedrooms and living spaces, receive more light and warmth, making homes more energy efficient.
Thanks to her knowledge, we now have a better understanding of how to create environmentally friendly homes. We’re truly grateful for the valuable lessons she shared.
The PBL term was very full and eventful. Each grade was given a topic and all their subjects revolved around this topic. We were kept busy and worked very hard resulting in amazing projects. We learnt valuable teamwork, researching, and compromising skills. Often we were pressed for time, but the teachers made sure we had enough time and helped a lot with managing our stress levels. Everything came together in the end and now we can sit back and appreciate our labours.
PBL teaches us 21st century skills such as collaboration and creativity. Each grade is given a topic which all their PBL tasks are based around. Our topic was humanity through the ages. We were given multiple tasks which we approached with much enthusiasm. Our cultural presentation was a success created by our critical thinking skills (when having to formulate a big question), outstanding communication skills and our impressive research skills. Overall PBL was a great learning experience and helped us grow to reach our full potential.
The 3rd Term is always full of fun and excitement, during PBL, this year was no different. All the girls grouped up and created many incredible pieces of art like wall murals which represented the stages of human kind, eco homes, which helped us understand the importance of the environment, and we created a cultural project, learning about many different cultures and lives of people in the cape, our home. Everyone learned the importance of time management, teamwork and tolerance. And we all enjoyed working together and having a good time, making memories.
Micklefield School came alive with vibrant colours and traditions as we celebrated Heritage Day in true South African style! The school grounds were filled with excitement as students and staff donned their Proudly South African colours, clothing, and traditional wear, showcasing the rich diversity of our nation.
The highlight of the day was our braai, where everyone gathered to enjoy delicious food in the spirit of togetherness. The celebration continued with a sweet treat as students roasted marshmallows, adding a fun and cozy touch to the festivities. It was a wonderful opportunity to reflect on and celebrate our unique heritage, making this year’s Heritage Day celebration one to remember.
On 31 August 2024, Micklefield School proudly hosted its 8th Foundation Phase Conference, welcoming 130 teachers from both Government and Independent Schools. Themed “Falling in Love with Education Again,” the conference aimed to inspire and rejuvenate educators, providing a platform for networking, learning, and sharing innovative ideas in the world of education.
This year’s conference was an overwhelming success, and much of that can be attributed to the incredible generosity of our sponsors. From spot prizes to thoughtfully curated goodie bags, your contributions made all the difference in making the day extra special for our delegates. Items such as beauty products, sweets, stationery, vouchers, wine, and even weekend getaways added a touch of surprise and excitement throughout the event.
Thanks to these donations, we were able to create an atmosphere of appreciation and celebration, reminding each teacher that they are not only valued by their students but by the wider community. The goodie bags were filled with delightful treats, and the spot prizes added a sense of joy and recognition, helping us show just how much we care about our educators.
The theme, “Falling in Love with Education Again,” came to life through every moment of the day, reminding teachers to find the silver linings in their work and leave the conference feeling rejuvenated and inspired. Your support played a vital role in achieving this goal, helping us create an event filled with positivity, encouragement, and care.
We extend our deepest gratitude to everyone who contributed to the Silver Linings Conference. Your kindness and generosity truly made a difference, and we are so thankful for your continued support in celebrating and uplifting our educators.
