As we draw the year to a close, we reflect on a time brimming with exploration, growth, and creativity. From our youngest learners discovering the magic of categorising bears and exploring their five senses to our older girls delving into the Renaissance and crafting personal inventions, it has been a year of curiosity and achievement. Sportsmanship flourished across netball and hockey tournaments, while musical talents shone at events like the music evenings and eisteddfods. Our classrooms buzzed with engaging projects and PBL’s, and outings to places like Kirstenbosch and be.UP Park brought learning to life in memorable ways.
Let us take a moment to look at some of the amazing things the school got up to in Term 4.
The arrival of spring brought an air of wonder to the Grade 00s as they explored themes of growth and renewal. The garden burst into colour, reflecting the girls’ curiosity as they planted beans in jars and carefully tracked their progress. The silkworms were a particular highlight, captivating everyone as they hatched, devoured mulberry leaves, spun their silk cocoons, and emerged as moths—bringing the life cycle to vivid life.
Imagination soared during the Fairy and Princess theme, where stories of magical lands and brave heroines inspired creative play in the fantasy area. The girls brought their favourite tales to life, delighting in storytelling and make-believe.
To wrap up the year, the Christmas theme offered a time for reflection and joy. As part of their “Celebrations” theme, the girls enjoyed connecting lessons from earlier discussions on different religions, marveling at the shared warmth and traditions of the festive season.
This year has been a journey of learning, creativity and wonder for our youngest learners, setting a strong foundation for their future adventures at Micklefield.
This term our girls have been exploring ‘Spring’ and ‘Life Cycles’. We raised our own silkworms from eggs to moths; we had a visit from some tadpoles at different stages of metamorphosis; we grew our own Grass Heads and had to take responsibility for watering them every day! From all our observations we were able to apply our knowledge of sequencing through art and flow maps.
We experienced the magic of science in a fun hands-on workshop. The girls made their own snow, slime and wiggly worms.
The Grade 0’s have had a wonderful time role-playing and engaging in fantasy play through our theme on fairy tales. We have learnt that the best qualities of a true princess are kindness, love, and respect, and that a true princess can follow her dreams, and she doesn’t have to wait to be rescued by a prince! We all have a little princess inside of us.
The Grade 00’s and 0’s gave joy and energy as our gift to the old folks at The Manor by singing their hearts out.
Our final theme of celebrations has given us a respect for other religions. The girls have enjoyed learning about other celebrations and we have had many discussions on how the celebrations are somewhat similar in spirit, emphasising: giving to those less fortunate, love for each other, and spending time with family and friends.
One of the highlights of this term has undoubtedly been the enchanting production of The Velveteen Rabbit by our Grade 1-3 girls, directed and adapted by Mrs G. Their beautiful performance reminded us of the timeless lessons of love and perseverance, brought to life through their dedication, creativity, and joy.
The evening and morning shows were a true testament to the girls’ hard work and the support of our Micklefield community. Thank you to all the parents and grandparents who joined us to celebrate this special moment. We are also grateful for the generous SnapScan donations made to the Micklefield pool fund.
Our Grade 00 and 0 girls enchanted the audience with their delightful production of Once Upon a Pond. The Micklefield School Hall came alive with their captivating storytelling, charming costumes, and radiant smiles.
It was a heartwarming display of teamwork and creativity, showcasing the incredible effort and enthusiasm they poured into their performance.
Well done to our youngest stars for a truly memorable show!
The term began with an incredible trip up Table Mountain in the cable car. Although the weather was freezing, the magnificent views made it a truly memorable experience. For many of the girls, it was their first time in the cable car, making it even more special.
Our Grade 4s embarked on an exciting outing to the Planetarium, sparking curiosity and awe about the wonders of space. The adventure began with a visit to the museum’s historical section, where the girls marveled at the enormous preserved animals displayed in glass cases.
Outside the Planetarium, they were fascinated by the “Black Hole” experience, watching coins disappear into its mysterious depths. Once inside, the magic truly unfolded as the stars seemed to cascade down upon them. Highlights included the constellations, the swirling Milky Way, planetary visuals, and the breathtaking size comparisons that reminded us how small we are in the vast Universe.
The day was a memorable exploration of science and wonder, leaving the girls inspired to reach for the stars.
The future Class of 2029 had their first taste of life at Micklefield during a delightful tea hosted for the new Grade 00 girls of 2024. They were warmly greeted by the Grade 6s, who guided them in playful exploration of their new school.
This special tradition not only eases the transition into school life but also highlights the strong bonds across grade levels that make Micklefield so unique. We can’t wait to see these little ones flourish in the coming year!
On Wednesday, 9 October 2024, we had the pleasure of welcoming back our Grade 7 Class of 2019 (now Grade 12s of 2024) for a delightful Past Pupils’ Tea.
The reunion was filled with laughter, stories, and memories as former classmates caught up with one another and reconnected with their teachers. It was a heartwarming reminder of the strong bonds that Micklefield fosters, and we were proud to celebrate the accomplishments of these young adults as they prepare to embark on the next exciting chapter of their lives.
Leavers Dinner by Leah Farlam (Grade 7)
Our class’s Leavers’ Dinner was one of the highlights of our last year at Micklefield. The theme of the evening was ‘A Night Under the Stars’, and the dinner was held at school in a marquee outside, with a view of the twinkling night sky. A lot of the excitement surrounding the evening involved getting all dressed up, and everyone arrived looking beautiful in their gorgeous dresses. The evening started with photographs, and then we all moved into the marquee.
The tables inside were set to perfection, covered in flowers, and gorgeous little details, and each girl was given a small gift at their place at the table. We girls sat at a long table in the centre of the marquee, while our parents and the teachers sat at smaller round tables spread out on the sides of the big table. Then speeches were given by the teachers and parents, and presentations and videos were shown. Mrs Walker wrote each girl a poem, dedicated to each one of us, and being read our poems was such a special part of the evening.
Each parent, moms and dads, wrote their daughter a letter, and these letters are so meaningful to all of us. After that, we ate our food, which consisted of a variety of different appetisers, sushi, calamari, fries, stir fry, and pasta for the main courses, and some small cakes and tarts for dessert. After we had eaten our way through all the food, we spent the rest of the evening on the dance floor, having a fantastic time. We all enjoyed our leavers’ dinner immensely, and so much thought, effort, and attention to detail was put into it by the parents, teachers, and staff members. I think that everyone will agree that we made so many special memories that we will cherish forever.

This term, the art department has been a hub of creativity and exploration for students from Grade 00 to Grade 7. The girls experimented with a variety of mediums, from painting vibrant pieces inspired by nature to crafting intricate sculptures. Some learners brought nature to life through imaginative nature art, while other grades showcased their skill and creativity with charming rabbit sculptures.
Each project highlighted the students’ growing confidence in expressing themselves through art and their ability to find beauty and inspiration in the world around them. The art room continues to be a space where creativity thrives and imaginations flourish!
We are thrilled to announce the winners of the Cape Town Art Eisteddfod and Peace Poster Competition, showcasing the incredible talent of our Micklefield girls.
Amaal Jaffar achieved first place in the Grade 1 to 3 section of the Cape Town Art Eisteddfod, a well-deserved recognition of her exceptional artistic abilities.
In the Cape Town Peace Poster Competition’s Local round, Lise Muller won first place, with Elizabeth Steyn earning second place and Chelsea Peterssen taking third. Their thought-provoking artwork captured the essence of peace and creativity beautifully.
Congratulations to all our talented artists—you’ve made Micklefield proud!
What a busy term it has been in Grade 1 – from reading more and more difficult books, learning how to spell big words, doing measurements and graphs in maths to tennis on the astro during Phys Ed and learning new notes on the recorder. We also performed in the play which was such a memorable experience. We have learned a lot and had so much fun along the way.
The Grade 1 open day was such a special day where the girls were able to sing, play the recorder and perform for their parents. They were also very proud to show all their classwork books to their parents in the classroom afterwards. Thank you to all the parents for coming to support us. We have come so far since the beginning of Grade 1.
This term has been a special one for Grade 2. Ms Southwood had the privilege of stepping into the classroom while Mrs Meredith was on maternity leave. We were delighted to hear that Mrs Meredith welcomed a beautiful baby girl, Rachel Zoe, into her family—what a wonderful celebration of new beginnings.
The theme this term was Festivals and Celebrations Around the World. The Grade 2s marked birthdays, dressed up for Civvies Day, and worked diligently on preparing for the play, The Velveteen Rabbit. Rehearsals were exciting, and the girls loved donning their costumes and bringing this timeless story to life.
The creativity and enthusiasm of the girls shone in their Celebrations oral/slide presentations on Canva. Their efforts were truly impressive, and they all gained a deeper appreciation for the diverse ways people celebrate across cultures.
A standout moment for many was their outing to De Grendel, where the children enjoyed walking through the picturesque vineyards and soaking in the beautiful scenery. A well-deserved treat of muffins at the end made the day even sweeter! The last outing of the term was a visit, with the Grade 1 class, to Groot Constantia. The girls explored the history and architecture of the estate, reflecting on how life has evolved over the centuries.
Grade 2 ended the term with a FUN Day at school and a final class party—a fitting way to celebrate a year filled with friendship, growth, and shared experiences.
“It has been a joy to witness the steady progress and enthusiasm of the Grade 2s. Spending this time with them has been a privilege, and I am excited to see all they will continue to achieve in the future.”
– Ms Southwood
The Grade 3 girls have had an exciting and rewarding term, filled with new discoveries and fun experiences! This term’s theme focused on Healthy Eating, where the girls explored the importance of making smart food choices. They learned about the different food groups and how a balanced, nutrient-rich diet helps them feel great, grow strong, and stay energised. A standout moment was when the girls packed their own healthy lunchboxes, selecting and analysing their food choices with excitement. It was amazing to see how small changes could create a well-balanced meal.
The highlight of the term was undoubtedly the Grade 3 production of The Velveteen Rabbit, where the girls excelled in their leading roles. Their performances were nothing short of outstanding, and they should be incredibly proud of their achievements.
The term ended on a high note with the Foundation Phase Fun Day, a perfect celebration of all the hard work and growth over the year. Well done to all the Grade 3 girls for a term—and a year—full of wonderful accomplishments.
The Grade 5 and 6 girls enjoyed breaking a sweat with their fathers and a few mothers (though the dads and moms might not have felt quite the same). Stephanie from Movement Lab led the session, teaching everyone choreography before the parents and daughters showed off their newly learned moves.
This year, we welcomed not just dads, but any special adult in the girls’ lives, ensuring everyone could be part of the fun.
Pizza was enjoyed, feet were tapping, and laughter filled the room as dancing took centre stage. Fun was had by all, making the ‘Shimmy and Slice’ a night to remember!
We bid a very sad farewell to our amazing Grade 7 Lit Quiz team. They wowed us at their final Lit Quiz competition that was held at SACS in the fourth term. Coming in the top ten out of 28 teams is definitely something to celebrate! We are so proud of our girls.
Our newly selected Grade 7 team for 2025 have big shoes to fill and we wish them many happy hours of reading to prep for next year’s competitions this holiday.
What an unforgettable experience our Grade 1 and 2 and Grade 3 and 4 camp-outs were this term.
The Grade 1 and 2 girls gathered around for a magical storytelling session with Gilly, where imaginations soared and laughter echoed through the night. Meanwhile, the Grade 3 and 4 girls took part in a rhythm workshop that had everyone tapping their feet and grooving to the beat.
Both events were made even more special by a fantastic braai, with dads and parents coming together for a relaxing and fun-filled evening. Thank you to everyone who helped make these nights so memorable.
This term, our Grade 4 girls embraced every opportunity for growth, creativity, and fun. They honed their entrepreneurial skills by organising a vibrant market day, where their teamwork and innovation shone.
The girls also enjoyed two memorable adventures: a camp that tested their resilience and teamwork and a special campout with the Grade 3s, which deepened bonds across grades.
Their talents were further showcased at the Music Evening, where they performed beautifully, delighting the audience with their enthusiasm and skill.
Grade 4 Camp
At this camp I learnt so much about teamwork and strategizing. You always have to give your team a chance, and it’s better if you strategise before you try. Thank you Wortelgat!
By: Samiah Vermeulen
I would say that I would never ever forget this amazing first camp experience. I really hope I can go back one day. I will always miss Jup-Jup, Dimples, Giggle and Lolli. Overall I really would rate Camp Wortelgat 101%
By Ella Titley
The Grade 4’s had an extremely successful Market. They had a great time planning, selling and interacting with each other. Thank you for the marvellous support from the rest of the school.
Well done, Grade 4s, for a term filled with hard work, joy, and unforgettable experiences!
This year, the Grade 5 girls focused on two important themes: accountability and time management. As they continue in the higher grades, it is crucial for them to understand the importance of taking responsibility for their actions and words. With growth and change on the horizon, the girls also navigated sensitive changes and shifts in social dynamics. We emphasised the importance of verbalizing boundaries with peers to prevent conflicts and encourage healthy communication.
Academically, the girls faced their first “exam week,” where they completed formal tests over two weeks. To help manage their time, a study timetable was introduced, giving them the tools to balance their academic workload.
Overall, the Grade 5s handled their final term with maturity and confidence, taking on their responsibilities and learning with enthusiasm. They are well-prepared for the next steps in their academic journey.
A highlight of the term was the Club Electron Electronics course, a workshop the Grade 5s have participated in annually since 2016. Under the expert guidance of Jessica and Jeanine, the girls were introduced to the fascinating world of circuits and electricity, transforming beginners into budding electrical engineers. The hands-on experience provided them with a solid understanding of how electrical currents work, sparking excitement for future exploration in science and technology.
The Grade 6 girls have had a successful and enriching year, filled with learning, reflection, and meaningful experiences. This term, they concluded their entrepreneurship sales, generously donating the proceeds to chosen organizations, demonstrating compassion and community spirit.
Throughout the year, the girls engaged in important discussions on human rights and our nation’s history, which culminated in a visit to the District Six Museum. This eye-opening experience deepened their understanding of the history in their own backyard, enriching their perspectives.
The term was also packed with exciting activities, including a fun and memorable camp experience and a special dance evening shared with parents and the Grade 5s.
Well done to the Grade 6s for embracing every opportunity with enthusiasm and ending the year on such a positive note!
The outing with our little girls was an amazing experience in the last few days we had with them. In previous years, the outing had been held at the Two Oceans Aquarium, but this year we went to the Clay Cafe. We travelled in two separate buses. The Grade 7s were able to help their little girls paint their chosen items, and thereafter, they went outside to play. Everyone was allowed to bring a treat with them to share with their big girls and little girls. We were at the Clay Cafe for a few hours and it was such a lovely way to spend time with our little girls.
Our end of year outing is a special one as we take the time to let our hair down and allow the creative juices to flow. Each learner received either a small mug or a side plate to paint. The girls then enjoyed their lunch on the lawn and ordered themselves a sweet treat from the restaurant. It was well-deserved after the busy and productive year we had!
What an incredible day. On 19th October, we were blessed with beautiful weather and a fantastic turnout for our 5km Fun Walk at De Grendel Wine Farm.
The walk was a wonderful opportunity to come together as a community, enjoy the stunning surroundings, and raise vital funds for our new school pool. Thanks to your generosity and enthusiasm, we are one step closer to making this exciting project a reality.
This year, Micklefield School made incredible strides in technology and digital creativity, exploring the exciting worlds of coding, design, and Minecraft. The introduction of Microbit coding and 3D design through Tinkercad brought hands-on innovation into our classrooms, igniting curiosity and creativity.
Our students also began working with a 3D printer, supported by A3 Microsoft Student Licenses, Microbits, and a robust EdTech program—exciting developments that are reshaping our digital learning experiences.
Minecraft: A New Digital Frontier
Minecraft became a powerful tool for learning across grades, fostering creativity, collaboration, and technical skills.
This year’s journey with coding and design has been a huge success, opening up new worlds of opportunity for our students. The EdTech department is excited to continue expanding our program, ensuring Micklefield remains at the forefront of digital education.
The youngest Micklefield girls brought big smiles and warm hearts to The Manor Retirement Home during their birthday outreach visit. Their delightful performance, filled with cheerful songs, was a highlight for the elderly residents, who look forward to this special tradition every year.
The feedback from the residents was glowing—they marveled at how talented and clever the girls are, though many wished the performance could have lasted longer! This meaningful connection between generations continues to be a cherished event, spreading joy to all involved.
Our girls have had a good term of tennis matches and swimming galas. Congratulations to our Open A tennis team who finished 3rd in the Top Schools Tournament and were undefeated in their league matches for the whole year.
Our swimming team continues to show commitment to their training and Friday galas.
We are delighted to celebrate the exceptional achievement of our Grade 3 student, Jade Banda, who has reached an extraordinary milestone in Mathletics.
Jade has earned an impressive 42 certificates this year, surpassing the standard Legend status to achieve the prestigious Super Legend title. This reflects her incredible dedication and consistency, as she has earned a certificate every week, including during the holidays.
Globally, very few students reach this level, and Jade currently ranks 2nd in South Africa. Her efforts place her within reach of the ultimate Infinite Legend certificate, an accolade yet to be achieved by any student worldwide.
We are incredibly proud of Jade’s hard work and commitment and invite our Micklefield community to join us in celebrating this remarkable accomplishment. Well done, Jade—you are an inspiration to us all.
The Grade 1 and 2 girls enjoyed a delightful outing to Groot Constantia, where they explored the fascinating Manor House museum and learned about life before cell phones, TVs, and electricity. The trip offered a glimpse into the past, sparking curiosity and wonder.
Afterwards, the girls enjoyed a picturesque picnic on the lush lawns, surrounded by vineyards, ducks, and squirrels. Travelling together on the bus added to the fun and excitement of the day.
It was a wonderful outing filled with learning, bonding, and the beauty of nature!
This term has been an enriching and exciting time for drama at Micklefield, with a range of performances, productions, and achievements to celebrate.
The Grade 7s embraced their creativity in the Inter-House Play Competition, with the theme “All the World’s a Stage.” The high-quality scripts and effective use of technology made this year’s competition truly memorable. Congratulations to Swallows for winning Best Play and Script with The Ages Through Micklefield by Leilah Joseph. Other notable awards included Amy Carlson (Best Director), Ava Klerk (Best Actress), and Isabelle Boers (Best Supporting Actress).
Every year, the house plays are full of fun, excitement and loads of responsibility. This year was no different. All the girls took on their roles with passion and enthusiasm and made up the most incredible plays. By appointing a director, tech team, head of advertising, and of course the actors, we learned all about leadership, initiative and connection. We all tried our hardest to make sure everyone had a good time and did their part to the best of their ability. From my point of view, we learned a lot. We learned how to cope with disappointment, burn out, and the stress of exams. We all enjoyed the experience and loved hearing the results of our amazing achievements. Thank you, Mrs G. for giving us such a memorable last drama performance at Micklefield.
In academics, class drama lessons were vibrant as ever:
We saw seven Micklefield students achieve excellent results in their Trinity College Drama Exams, with particular commendation for their theory skills. Mrs G. is immensely proud of their accomplishments.
The Grade 3–7 girls enjoyed a special treat when a visiting theatre group performed the classic tale The Emperor’s New Clothes. This entertaining production offered a welcome break after the challenges of exams and assessments.
Extra-Mural Drama concluded the year with a fun celebration, including games and farewells to the talented Grade 7 thespians who have left a lasting impact on the school’s cultural life.
It has truly been a dramatic and fulfilling term—bravo to all involved!
The Foundation Phase Fun Day was an unforgettable event for our Grade 00 to Grade 3 girls, packed with activities that brought smiles, laughter, and a sense of camaraderie.
The day included a burst of energy as the girls explored the giant jumping castle, bouncing their way to pure delight. A petting zoo featuring adorable rabbits captivated the children, giving them the chance to interact gently with these furry friends—a highlight for many.
In keeping with our commitment to balance and well-being, the girls enjoyed a calming yoga session, finding their inner zen amidst the fun-filled excitement. Ms Sporty Smith brought her signature creativity and energy to lead a hilarious group game that had everyone in stitches.
With the warm summer sun shining down, the sprinklers became a refreshing oasis for the girls to splash and cool off while enjoying the outdoors.
The day was a joyful celebration of play, connection, and the vibrant spirit of our Foundation Phase. A big thank you to all the staff and helpers who made this memorable event possible—it was a perfect way to end the year on a high note!

On our outing to the rocky seashore at Dalebrook tidal pool, we had an incredible time exploring marine life with Emma-Beth Peters as our guide. She taught us about the fascinating organisms that thrive in the rock pools, like starfish, sea anemones, limpets, and the brightly coloured chiton. One of the most interesting creatures was the barnacle, which has adapted to survive in the harsh conditions of the tidal zone by using its hard, calcified shell to protect itself from predators and the constant battering of the waves. After learning so much, we had a refreshing swim in the tidal pool, where the calm, clear water was a perfect contrast to the rocky shoreline. Overall, it was a fun and educational day, with plenty of opportunities to connect with nature and enjoy the beauty of the coast.
Our dads and daughters camp was such an incredible experience. We were on the river, in the mud and on the sand in a wonderful weekend of fun with the dads. The girls were all together in one dorm and the dads shared a dorm. On the first day we made some epic war cries for our teams and our flags looked amazing. That night, we had a karaoke evening with Mrs Walker and Mrs Blackbeard doing a spectacular cover of Uptown Funk.
We canoed on and swam in the river which was a bit cold, but after a while everyone got used to it! The muddy obstacle course was a great challenge for everyone as we swam through mud, balanced on planks and hiked over obstacles. There was such good teamwork and we all worked so well together. My highlight of the camp was the volleyball court where we played dads and daughter volleyball and even Mrs Walker joined in for a bit. We had fun braais and had so many meals and delicious snacks together. We had such fun with people that we have been with for nine years and it was such a special time. This was such a fun camp and a highlight of our year, that I will remember forever.
Every year Micklefield hosts a Maths Relay which includes a number of different schools. This year was no different and there was lots of nervous excitement in the air as we met new people and put on our thinking caps, getting ready to start. We were split into groups that were named after colours, eg: pink, blue, and purple. The questions were graded with easy questions worth 10 points, 20 points for medium level and the most difficult questions earned your team 30 points. We had a quick snack break after the first hour or so, and we were given a doughnut and some juice. Once we were refuelled, we headed back for the next round. The relay ended with a rapid speed round of five minutes where we could take as many questions as we wanted. The prize-giving concluded this incredible experience, and Lise’s team took the title of first place, Amy’s team came second, third place went to Leah’s team, and Sophie’s team was fourth. Overall it was a challenging learning experience, and lots of fun, and we will greatly benefit from it in the future.
What a sensational event! The Grade 7 Games were a greatly significant entrepreneurial opportunity for every Grade 7. Our EMS teacher, Titshalakazi, offered manageable and easy-to-follow criteria in which we were instructed to organise our own active event, or game.
Each game suggested creativity and originality, leading to ultimate commercial success. A few instances of games associated with the Grade 7 Game Event include Pumpkin Pop, Trivia Splash, Cookie Monster and Plates of Fate. We adopted valuable lessons in financial management, and we developed modern 21st century skills in all aspects that can be applied in real life situations. Through our various efforts and endeavours, we managed to raise a substantial amount of money, which would go directly towards the End-Of-Year-Gift fund. The Grade 7 Games was a truly memorable experience, and will continue to set future standards for all.
Micklefield School is thrilled to announce the completion of Phase One of our Lea Road property development. The property, recently acquired by the school, has undergone extensive renovations, transforming the existing house into a charming and functional space. Currently, the house is rented out, until we are ready for the next phase.
Looking ahead, the next step is Phase Two: the development of a new swimming pool, which will be a fantastic asset for our school and community. Fundraising efforts are already underway, and we are excited about the potential this project holds for enhancing our facilities and creating more opportunities for our students.
The Lea Road development reflects Micklefield’s commitment to growth and innovation while ensuring the school remains a nurturing and forward-thinking environment.
