Welcome to our final newsletter of 2025, a celebration of another vibrant, joyful, and hardworking year at Micklefield. As we look back on the months filled with learning, laughter, creativity, and community spirit, we are reminded once again of what makes our school so special: the dedication of our staff, the enthusiasm of our girls, and the unwavering support of our families.
This edition reflects the many moments that shaped our year — from unforgettable outings and inspiring performances to shared milestones and heartfelt farewells. What a magical evening we enjoyed as our Foundation Phase girls stepped into the spotlight for Strictly Fairytale Come Dancing.
From the moment the music began to play, the hall was filled with enchantment, graceful twirls, joyful smiles and energetic footwork. The girls brought classic fairytales to life with dance, colour and creativity.
This show was a wonderful opportunity for the girls to shine, to support one another and to celebrate the joy of movement, imagination and community.
A special thank you needs to go to Mrs Wyngaard for coordinating the production and doing all the choreography, Mrs Warner-Smith for teaching the girls the songs and accompanying them during the performance and all the class teachers for giving of their time and support. Another thank you needs to go to the parents who helped behind the scenes with costumes, make-up and encouragement.
And most of all, well done to each girl for contributing to such a memorable, heart-warming evening.

The school was buzzing on Saturday, 25 October, for our much-loved Micklefield Market.
There was something for everyone, from delicious food stalls and exciting games to beautifully curated entrepreneurial stands run by the Grade 6 girls.
The Grade 7 Haunted House had brave visitors squealing with fright, while the lucky draw and second-hand bookstall drew plenty of eager shoppers.
It was heart-warming to see Micklefield girls past, present, and future enjoying the laughter, the treats, and the unmistakable magic of our school community.
We are delighted to share that the event raised approximately R150 000 for the Swimming Pool Fund. What an incredible achievement made possible by the dedication and generosity of our community.
A heartfelt thank you goes to our amazing class reps, who worked tirelessly to help bring this special day to life. To every parent who baked, built, donated, volunteered, or came along to support — thank you. Your enthusiasm and commitment are what make the Micklefield Market such a standout event each year.
What a joyful celebration of community spirit — and what a resounding success!
Term 4 has been a fabulous and joy-filled term for our Grade 00 girls. We began with our Spring theme, and the beautiful weather matched our learning perfectly. The girls explored Life Cycles, eagerly observing their silkworms and bean plants as they grew and changed each day.
One of the highlights of the term was Twilight Tales. The excitement of being at school after dark, combined with pizza, storytelling and the magical tales shared by Gilly Southwood, made it an evening the girls will remember for a long time.
Our next theme was declared “the best theme ever” by the girls – Fairies and Princesses! We delighted in reading both traditional and modern fairy tales, immersing ourselves in a world of imagination. The term ended on a festive note as we celebrated Christmas and enjoyed a week filled with cheerful mischief from some very naughty elves.
A firm favourite was a very energetic PE lesson with the Grade 7 mentors. Despite the soaring temperatures, enthusiasm never waned, and the giggles and smiles said it all.
It has been a truly memorable year with these special girls. Our time together has been busy, filled with learning, laughter and countless heart-warming moments. It has been a privilege to be part of their growth, and I wish each of them every success and happiness in the years ahead.
Although this term was a short one, it was bursting with creativity, exploration and joyful learning for our Grade 0 girls. We discovered new ways to express ourselves through art, writing, music and movement, finding our voices in colour, rhythm and imaginative storytelling.
The girls loved exploring the work of various artists and interpreting their styles, creating their own beautiful masterpieces inspired by what they had learned. In Music, with guest teacher Jo Ashwell, the girls experimented with different instruments and discovered how music can shape feelings, moods and stories.
There was great excitement as the girls choreographed their own dances, working in groups to practise cooperation, expression and confidence through movement. Alongside all the creative fun, we continued to build strong foundations in Maths, learning addition and subtraction with our new friends Gus Plus and Linus Minus — solving problems with enthusiasm and pride.
Phonics also remained a key focus, with the girls strengthening their skills in blending and segmenting, as well as substitution and manipulation games that develop accuracy and fluency.
This term, our Grade 0 girls were treated to a series of inspiring visits from parents who generously shared their careers and the many ways they give back to their communities. These sessions quickly became a highlight of the week, sparking curiosity, excitement and wonderful conversations.
The girls were captivated as Zuri’s dad, Nick Meysfield, showed them how he “puts Franky to sleep,” and they had great fun creating mood boards for their dream bedrooms with Greg Mellor. Jane Ashforth introduced the girls to the world of advertising, even sharing the classic Cadbury Gorilla advert — much to their delight.
Dr Nicky Maree taught the girls all about being a doctor and guided them in bandaging each other up with great care, while Thandi Scriba demonstrated how kindness and laughter can make a lasting impact through her work as a clown. To top it off, Alexa-Breeze’s parents showed the girls just how exciting life as a scientist can be.
We also explored careers that are not traditionally viewed as “girl” professions. Andrew Lloys Ellis shared his work as a builder, and Chris Hewitt introduced the girls to the world of project management in the oil and petroleum industry. The girls were fascinated, engaged and full of excellent questions.
These visits broadened horizons, sparked new dreams and showed our Grade 0 girls that they can be anything and make a difference in so many meaningful ways.
A short term indeed, but a meaningful one for Grade 0 filled with learning, laughter and countless moments to treasure.
The Grade 00 and Grade 0 Showcase was nothing short of phenomenal. The girls and their parents absolutely loved the experience, making it a memorable highlight of the term.
The morning was filled with proud moments as the girls performed beautifully, their confidence and joy on stage shining through every song and action. A heartfelt thank you goes to Mrs Warner-Smith for her wonderful piano accompaniment, which added such warmth to the performances.
Afterwards, it was a delight for the girls to welcome their moms and dads into the classroom and playground to share in the activities that make up their school day. The smiles, excitement and connection between families made the event special.
Our first showcase was a resounding success — a celebration of courage, creativity and community in our youngest grades.
We are so proud of our talented Micklefield writers who excelled at this year’s Cape Town Creative Writing Eisteddfod.
Micklefield was awarded the Emma Brink Award for the school with the most diplomas, achieving an impressive 11 Diplomas in total.
A special congratulations to Zara, who won a Gold Medal for her short story and received Honours for her poem The Peacock. Noor and Jennifer both earned Silver Medals, along with several Diplomas and High Honours for their outstanding poetry and essays.
Many other Micklefield girls also received Honours, High Honours, and Diplomas for their creative pieces — a wonderful celebration of imagination and expression. Congratulations to all our young writers on these exceptional achievements.

This term, our Grade 1 girls proudly completed their Time2Read programme and have embraced their newfound confidence with great excitement. They have been eagerly reading books, writing messages and cards for friends, and even crafting their own short stories.
As Dr Seuss reminds us, “The more you read, the more things you will know. The more you learn, the more places you’ll go.”
Well done, girls — you are certainly on your way! Your determination, curiosity and enthusiasm for reading and writing have been a joy to witness, and we are incredibly proud of each of you.
This term, Grade 2s embarked on a wonderful exploration of Celebrations Around the World, discovering the rich traditions and customs that make each culture unique.
The girls worked enthusiastically through celebration-themed activity mats and created beautiful crafts, including Diwali lanterns, Chinese New Year dragons and Halloween paper scenes. A highlight was designing their own presentations in EdTech, where they confidently showcased their learning with flair and creativity.
Although the term was short, it was certainly a busy one. In Maths, the girls learnt about money, developing practical skills through engaging activities.
They also worked diligently to complete their year-end workbooks, showing growing independence and pride in their learning.
This term, the Grade 3s have been learning how to keep their bodies healthy through the choices they make every day. We began by exploring the difference between everyday foods, which fuel and strengthen us, and “sometimes” foods, which we enjoy as occasional treats. With an emphasis on balance rather than labelling foods as “good” or “bad,” the girls kicked off the unit with a delightful healthy food picnic.
We learnt about the different food groups and why each one is important for good health. The girls enjoyed packing their own balanced lunchboxes to show how all the food groups can be included in a single meal. Our learning then moved inside the body as we explored the digestive system, discovering what happens to food once it enters the body. The girls were particularly fascinated by the “Tiny Tummy Team”—our gut microbes—and learnt how to care for them through healthy habits.
To apply their new knowledge, every girl participated in our “30 Plants Per Week Challenge.” The aim was to encourage them to try new plant-based foods to support their gut health. They earned house points for each plant food included and bonus points for fermented foods. It was a wonderfully engaging way to expand their palates and build lifelong healthy habits.
This term has been a vibrant celebration of participation, teamwork and determination across all our sporting codes. Our girls have embraced every opportunity to be active, challenge themselves and uplift one another, and it has been inspiring to witness their enthusiasm.
Our swimmers took part in five Friday afternoon galas, displaying impressive team spirit and steady progress in the pool.
On the courts, our tennis programme continues to flourish, fielding three U11 teams (A–C) and six Open teams (A–F) who represented Micklefield proudly in fixtures against a range of schools. It is wonderful to see so many girls choosing to be involved and developing a genuine love for sport.
During PE lessons, from Grade 00 through to Grade 7, the focus has been on building skills in balance, fitness, agility, ball games and plenty of friendly competition. Whether it was our youngest girls mastering hopping, skipping and jumping, or our seniors working on strategy, teamwork and resilience, every class has shown courage and commitment.
We are so proud of the way our girls continue to discover that sport is about more than competition — it is about effort, growth, supporting others and realising just how capable they are. Well done, Micklefield girls, on yet another fantastic term of sport!
This term in Art was dedicated to consolidating the foundational skills developed throughout the year. The girls created beautiful artworks that showcased their growing confidence, creativity and understanding of key techniques.

A very special congratulations goes to Noor, who won the District West League of the International Peace Poster Competition hosted by the Lions— an extraordinary accomplishment.
Her poster was selected from entries submitted by schools across the Western Cape, Northern Cape and Namibia, and will now be judged against the District East winner from the eastern regions of South Africa.
Should she be selected as the South African winner, her artwork will move on to the international stage.
We are incredibly proud of all our young artists for their imagination, hard work and exceptional achievements this term.

This term, Grade 4 has been captivated by the Wonders of the Universe. From creating imaginative inventions and cartoons about aliens on other planets, to learning about the phases of the Moon, the girls have explored space with curiosity and creativity and discovered that Buzz Aldrin, not Buzz Lightyear, was the second man to walk on the Moon.
Our Space Orals were incredible. With excellent presentations and props, the girls shared fascinating topics including Hoag’s Object, Starlink, radio waves and nebulae. Everyone left a little wiser and more inspired about the universe.
In Social Science, our focus was on Communication. The girls explored the many ways people have connected over the centuries, from the clan necklaces of the San to the whistled language of Silbo Gomero in the Canary Islands, and even Alexander Graham Bell’s invention of the telephone.
While digital communication is part of our daily lives, the girls have learnt that nothing quite replaces a good, old-fashioned chat with a friend.
As we look back on the term, it’s clear that the Grade 4s have grown in curiosity, confidence, and creativity.
Exploring galaxies to understanding the power of communication, they have approached every lesson with enthusiasm and wonder. What an exciting journey it has been. Well done, Grade 4s.
It has been a jam-packed term for our Grade 5 girls, filled with academics, sport, their first experience of exam week, and plenty of fun events along the way.
In Social Science, we explored Weather and Climate and enjoyed a hands-on visit to Megan Cole’s garden, where the girls saw a working weather station and learnt how real-world data is captured and used. Inspired, the girls became weather reporters, creating their own weather reports for The Micklefield Muse.
In History, the girls completed their Heritage Scrapbook Project, which they had been working on since the start of the term. Covering chapters such as All About Me, My Parents, Grandparents, Family Traditions, Culture, Religion, and Food, the project culminated in outstanding presentations.
Sharing a variety of cultural treats like Ras Malai, kourabiedies, samoosas, milk tart, and banana bread made the experience even more memorable. Sampling each other’s creations brought the project to life, and the girls thoroughly enjoyed this delicious celebration of culture and tradition.
This term, Grade 6 girls delved into South Africa’s political past in History while their Natural Sciences lessons explored the theme of Energy.
The term began with lively discussions as the girls attempted to identify examples of “atom-sized” objects, an exercise that was both challenging and fascinating.
From there, they examined renewable and non-renewable fuels before moving on to the immense power of nuclear energy.
A highlight of the term was learning about the Chernobyl disaster of 26 April 1986, when Reactor 4 exploded. The girls investigated the causes, the devastating aftermath, and the critical importance of strict safety protocols, understanding the severe consequences when these are neglected.

To bring their learning to life, the girls took a virtual “walk” through the abandoned town of Pripyat, seeing schoolbooks, children’s cots, and firefighters’ gear frozen in time. They observed how nature has slowly reclaimed the landscape, restoring life to a place once deemed uninhabitable. The experience was made even more memorable by the crackling of a Geiger Counter, detecting radioactive materials in various parts of the Exclusion Zone, an unforgettable moment for our budding scientists.
Beyond the classroom, our Grade 6s have shown remarkable initiative through their entrepreneurship sales, working hard all year to raise funds for their chosen charities. This term, they proudly handed over their contributions, making a tangible difference in the lives of others. We are extremely proud of their efforts and extend a huge thank you to parents and the wider school community for supporting their sales — your encouragement and generosity made their success possible.
This year has been a remarkable one for our Grade 7 girls, filled with dedication, growth, and countless achievements. From academics to sports, music, arts, and leadership opportunities, the girls have embraced every challenge with determination, resilience, and enthusiasm.
We are incredibly proud of the hard work, commitment, and teamwork they have shown throughout the year. Each girl has grown not only in knowledge and skill, but also in confidence, independence, and character.
As they prepare to take the next steps in their journey, we celebrate their accomplishments, their perseverance, and the positive impact they have had on the entire Micklefield community. Well done, Grade 7s — you have made us very proud.
EMS Games Day was another successful Grade 7 event. It was a day full of fun, joy and high spirits as Grades 3-6 enjoyed trying new games while sharing many happy moments filled with lots of giggles.
There were several games on offer, all amazing and unique. The games included beauty bars, bottle-flip bullseye, putting the celebrity back together, general knowledge pucker-up, guide the blind and chuck-a-duck, as well as many more for the girls to enjoy. Everyone had lots of fun, according to their positive feedback, beaming smiles and the continuous rush to play each game. I think it is true to say, many memories were made and many laughs were shared.
The Grade 7s learnt so much during this experience such as organisational and entrepreneurial skills. It was definitely a great learning opportunity, as well as a fantastic way to raise money.
We loved hosting these wonderful games and are thankful to all the pupils who helped and supported us to reach a big total to fund our end-of-year gift to the school. A huge thank you to Mrs Waldron for giving us this opportunity and helping us manage and organise our games, as well as to all the class teachers for allowing your girls out of class to come support the grade 7s.
What an exciting final term it has been in EdTech, Robotics, and Coding. Our pupils have been absolutely brilliant as they explored and developed their digital skills across all grade levels.
The younger grades laid important foundations. Our Grade 1s mastered logging onto computers and created vibrant designs in Canva, while the Grade 2s developed their typing skills, explored Canva creatively, and got hands-on with Lego Spike Prime coding.
Grades 3 and 4 took on imaginative challenges in Minecraft MakeCode, using code to build incredible structures and design unique presentations to showcase their work.

Our Grade 5s demonstrated impressive versatility — blending Ancient Egyptian artwork with Canva creations, editing weather report videos, coding in Minecraft, and building on their block-based coding skills with an introduction to JavaScript in Micro:bit.

Grade 6 focused on strengthening their coding foundations through Minecraft Education MakeCode, while Grade 7 explored both Minecraft Education and Micro:bit, working across block-based coding and JavaScript as they prepare for high school.
The energy, creativity, and determination shown by all our pupils this term has been inspiring. Watching them tackle challenges, experiment boldly, and grow confident in new technologies has been an absolute privilege.

On the 3rd of November 2025, the Pastoral Committee hosted a tea party for the support staff.
This was to thank them for all the things they do around the school. The staff who were invited were Niki, Theo, Mphumsi, Jomo, Nokuzola and Nocawe.
The whole Grade 7 class contributed by baking and getting treats and decor for the tea.
We as a Grade 7 class, were happy to do this for the support staff, as they do so much for us. We hope this tea gave them the rest that they deserve. We hope this tea helped them feel happy as we are super thankful for everything they do for us around the school.
What a vibrant and enriching term it has been in the Music Department, with our girls shining across a wide range of performances, assessments, and celebrations. This has really showcased not only their musical growth but also their commitment, enthusiasm, and love of learning.
This year saw a record number of students taking part in live and digital performances. We are thrilled with the outstanding results, from personal bests to confident first-time entries.

Our Shocking Pink ensemble enjoyed a delightful musical journey this term, performing at both Elkanah House and Erin Hall. Their musicality and spirit, under the warm and inspiring guidance of Ms Lorna Field, were truly special.
Shocking Pink bids a farewell to Ms Field at the end of the year as she retires and we look forward to the next chapter for this ensemble under the leadership of Ms Babette Viljoen.
In a spontaneous burst of musical joy, our String, Guitar, Recorder, and Flute Ensembles delighted the school with an impromptu lunch-hour concert. This was a festive and uplifting way to end the year on a high note.

On 13 November, our Grade 1s set off on an exciting adventure to the Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens.
The girls loved wandering along the iconic Boomslang walkway, taking in the breathtaking views from above the trees. They explored the Fragrance Garden, touching and smelling plants used for cooking and healing, and visited the Braille Trail, where they paused to imagine what it might feel like to navigate the world without sight.
Along the way they spotted birds, towering trees, colourful plants, and even “Teddy Bear Mountain.”
After a well-deserved snack break on the lawns, the girls continued their mission of discovery, soaking up the sunshine and the wonders of nature.
It was a wonderful day of learning, curiosity, and outdoor fun, the perfect Grade 1 adventure.
A wonderful highlight of the term was our Strawberry-Picking outing to Helderberg Farm with the Grade 2s and 3s. The girls delighted in gathering juicy red strawberries straight from the fields, and the weather couldn’t have been more perfect — warm enough to enjoy the sunshine, yet cool enough for a comfortable morning outdoors.

The adventure continued with a refreshing hike to the dam and back, where the girls soaked up the fresh air and beautiful scenery. It was a lovely opportunity to explore nature, enjoy time with friends, and bring our learning themes to life.
For the Grade 3s, it was a fun and fitting way to round off their studies on healthy, happy bodies. For the Grade 2s, it concluded their focus on the wonders of nature. A day filled with laughter, sunshine, and sweet treats — the perfect end to a busy term2
What a dynamic and joy-filled term it has been in the Drama Department. From our youngest performers to our senior stars, the girls have embraced the stage with energy, imagination, and growing confidence.
The Foundation Phase was buzzing with dramatic excitement this term.
The Grade 1s delighted their families with a charming performance of The Bojabi Tree at their Showcase Morning.
All three grades then took to the stage in the original Micklefield production, Strictly Fairytale Come Dancing, written and directed by Ms Wyngaard. The girls’ enthusiasm, sparkle, and sheer joy made this whimsical play a true crowd-pleaser.

Grade 4s explored the theme of identity, diving into activities that encouraged self-expression and storytelling.
Grade 5s ventured into the world of mystery, experimenting with suspense, character clues, and dramatic tension.
Grade 6s studied the iconic playwright Oscar Wilde, bringing his wit and style to life through improvisation and performance work.

We are thrilled to celebrate the outstanding achievements of our Trinity candidates. All five girls achieved Distinctions (85%+).
A remarkable accomplishment and a testament to their hard work, talent, and commitment.
Our Grade 7s graced the Micklefield stage one last time with their much-anticipated Inter-House Plays, all scripted and directed by the girls themselves. This year’s theme, A Little Bit of Magic, brought creativity, humour, and heart to the theatre, with the whole school dressing up for a sparkling celebration of storytelling.
For Term 4’s Civvies Day, the girls enjoyed a special day at the theatre, showing off dazzling outfits that reflected their creativity and flair. The Grade 3–6 girls were entertained by the Grade 7 house plays, while our younger learners enjoyed fun theatre-style shows in their classrooms.
It was a magical day of performance, imagination, and community, a perfect way to celebrate creativity and the joy of theatre together.
On the 26th of November, our Grade 7 girls took part in their annual inter-house plays. They were all given the prompt of a play with ‘a little bit of magic’.
Each house worked together very hard for 6 weeks to complete each of their plays. All the girls from Grade 3 to 6 came dressed up for the theatre to watch the plays.

The first play they watched was the Swallows. The Swallows play was called “Toast to Time” where historical figures came back to the future every time a piece of toast was ready.
The Kingfishers play was called ‘Happily Ever After’ which was about a girl named Kinsley who doesn’t quite fit in. During science class, an experiment goes wrong and she travels to the ‘Krazy Kingdoms’, where she then realises that she just needs to be herself and no one else.
The Robins play was called “Triple Trouble” where three girls who are complete opposites swapped bodies, and to get back into their original bodies, they had to complete various tasks and challenges. Overall, the plays were incredible, and all the girls should be very proud of their work.

On Monday the 24th of November, the Grade 7s held a Splash Bash, for Grades 1-7. All the girls who came had so much fun.
They each got a chance to slide down the water slide if they wanted to, or play a game called Water Wars. I don’t think the little ones understood the game, but I do think they had fun throwing sponges at each other. They were all very satisfied with the juice boxes and watermelon pieces. They each got an ice cream when they left.
Everyone was having a ball playing, chatting and having fun. Nzinga in Grade 1 said that her favourite part of Splash Bash was the water slide, and I could not agree more.
What a wonderful way to end the year. Our Grade 7 Lit Quiz team concluded their two-year journey representing Micklefield with an outstanding performance in the WPPS Lit Quiz. Competing against 22 teams, our Grade 7s achieved an impressive joint 8th place, while our Grade 6 team followed closely behind in joint 10th. With only 7 points separating us from the winning team, the competition was incredibly close.

The Grade 4s had an exciting and enriching outing to the Planetarium and the Museum of Natural History in Cape Town. The girls were captivated by the immersive Planetarium show, which brought the wonders of space to life and tied in beautifully with their term’s learning.
They also enjoyed exploring the Museum of Natural History, discovering fascinating exhibits about animals, fossils, and our planet’s past.
On Wednesday, 19 November, the class of Grade 4 2025 went on an outing.
First, they went to the planetarium and saw beautiful constellations and watched a movie about the solar system. Then they went to the whale well and saw the jaws of a whale.
They then went to see the gorgeous gemstones and crystals, some of the crystals were rose quartz, amethyst and even some gold, and Jade, a girl in their class, saw a crystal with the same name as her. They then went to have a small snack. They also went to see the African animals’ exhibit. Some of the girls even made a small joke, they said, “I swear if this animal moves, I am running at the speed of light,” they joked.
After the African animals, they went to the dinosaur exhibit, and the whole class made the shape of a dinosaur, the king of crocodiles. They then went to the San exhibit, where they saw the stunning and unique rock paintings made by the San people.
They then went to the global warming exhibit, which was very interesting but also quite concerning about how much litter there was on Earth. After that, their teacher, Ms Keeton, talked to them about the coelacanth, pronounced sea-lo-canth. The coelacanth is an old fish that was alive when the dinosaurs were alive, but people then found out that it is still alive.
I had lots of fun at the planetarium. It was so fascinating!
Although the Grade 5s didn’t head out on an outing this term, they enjoyed an exciting and highly interactive workshop right here at school, a 4-hour Electronics session hosted by Club Electron. It was the perfect extension of their Natural Sciences theme, Energy and Change, and their exploration of electrical circuits.
During the workshop, the girls completed the first half of the Level 1 Electronics Curriculum, diving into both the theory and hands-on application of electricity. They explored:
What electricity is and how electrons, current, and energy flow through a circuit
The basics of voltage, current, and resistance, and how these elements interact
How to read and interpret simple circuit diagrams
Building and testing real circuits using authentic components
How circuits behave when connected in series and parallel
Experimenting with batteries and components to observe different outcomes
The girls were thoroughly engaged and excited throughout the workshop, asking thoughtful questions and experimenting confidently. It was a wonderful way to bring science to life and spark a deeper curiosity about how the world works.
This term, the Grade 6s visited the District Six Museum, where they explored the lives of families who once called District Six home before being forcibly removed.
Retracing these journeys, viewing preserved artefacts, and hearing from a guide who lived through these events made the history deeply tangible and real for the girls.
Everyday items — from toys and shoes to cooking utensils — and personal stories offered a window into a world both vastly different from, yet at times strikingly similar to, their own. The experience encouraged thoughtful reflection and prompted an important question: “Why?”
It was a meaningful outing that brought history to life and inspired empathy, curiosity, and deeper understanding.
As a culmination of our intertidal zone science research, the Grade 7s spent their last outing at Dalebrook Beach exploring the tidal pools.
It was a most enjoyable day on the seashore as we explored all there was to see, from various types of seaweed and ocean critters to a rare octopus sighting! Emma-Beth Peters offered incredible insight into everything there was to know about the rocky seashore. After our deep dive into the intertidal zone, we crossed the road to Chardonnay Deli to treat ourselves to some delicious eats and conversations with friends. A big thank you to Ms Walker, Ms G and Emma-Beth for making our last outing so special!
A highlight of Term 4 was the joint outing to Clay Café in Hout Bay with our Grade 7 ‘Big Girls’.
It was a glorious day, filled with creativity and laughter as the girls — both big and small — decorated their own pottery pieces and enjoyed some outdoor play.
For our youngest learners, travelling on a bus was an exciting first-time adventure, adding even more fun to the day. It was a wonderful opportunity for the girls to bond across grades, explore their artistic talents, and make happy memories together.
What a fantastic evening of fun, laughter, and dancing. This year, our Grade 5 and 6 girls joined their dads (or a chosen adult) for the much-loved Shimmy and Slice event, which took on a lively Country Western Barn Dance theme.
The girls and their chosen adults enjoyed learning new dance steps, twirling on the dance floor, and sharing plenty of smiles along the way.
The Barn Dance was on the 8th of October 2025. On that night, we did line dancing with a Scottish twist led by Mary and her daughter, Katherine.
We started where everyone was holding hands, and we went around in a circle. This was quite a bit of cardio if you ask me. For most of the night, we danced either in groups of 4 or in larger groups, which was really fun.
At the end of the day, both Rahma and I felt that no matter how embarrassing and (unfit) our dads can be, we will always love and cherish this special memory we made with them.
I am so happy to say that the dads and daughters camp of 2025 was a huge success. So much effort went into making it the best end-of-year camp possible.
The girls and their dads were taken out of their comfort zones. We drove out to High Africa adventure camp in Worcester, where the fun started almost immediately, breaking into challenges galore.
So much laughter and joy was had, and their dads tested their fitness levels from kayaking and swimming in the refreshing river to rock climbing to extreme heights and tricky obstacle courses 12 meters in the air!
My favourite activity was when we had to work together to fill a massive tube with holes while filling it with water from the lake without it spilling out! But every activity was above and beyond amazing.
At the end of our camp, there was a prize giving, from best tasting potjie-pot, to the team with the most points, and the person with the most spirit. Complete with trophies and, of course, chocolates.
We all loved High Africa, the staff, the adventures, and the quality time with our dads. That shows just how lucky we are to go there and have the best time, dads and daughters alike. We only wish we could come back next year. I will never forget this amazing trip. Thank you to Ms Blackbeard and Mrs Walker, and especially, High Africa!
This term, Micklefield hosted two very special events celebrating our school community: the Alumni Tea and the New Girls Tea.
On Saturday, 1 November, we welcomed back alumni from across the years, from as far back as 1942 to as recent as 2020. It was wonderful to see past pupils and past staff reconnect, share their stories, and reminisce about memorable moments and interesting snippets of Micklefield history.

Then, on Wednesday, 5 November, we warmly welcomed the new girls who will be joining Grade 00 and Grade 0 next year. Our Grade 6 girls took great pride in showing the little ones around the playground, playing games, and helping them feel right at home with pink cupcakes for all.
Both events were joyful, filled with laughter, stories, and anticipation for the year ahead, a perfect way to celebrate the start of new beginnings and the ongoing legacy of our alumni.
The end of the year was celebrated in style with a Fun Day for Grades 00 to 3.
The morning was packed with exciting activities, including relaxing yoga, a delightful petting zoo, creative cookie baking, sporty challenges, and even a magical performance that left everyone amazed.
No summer celebration would be complete without watermelon and plenty of water play, keeping the girls cool and full of smiles.
Dressed in civvies, the girls loved spending time with animals, playing, and simply enjoying each other’s company — the perfect way to end the year.
A heartfelt thank you to all the teachers who helped organise such a fun-filled and memorable morning.
The Leavers’ Dinner is, without a doubt, the highlight of every Grade 7’s year. Not only is the event enjoyable, but the excitement of getting ready, doing your hair and getting a gorgeous dress channels such a thrill inside you.
The theme of the Leavers’ Dinner this year was “In full bloom”, which suited the occasion, because we had reached our “full bloom” at Micklefield. With the help of some parents, the hall was transformed into an unrecognisable, fabulous, floral-themed dining room. The stage was lit up by twinkling lights, and the food was impeccable.
I think I speak on behalf of everyone who attended when I say that this was one of the highlights of the evening. We got to see everyone’s inner dancer, which was an enjoyable experience for us all. The Leavers’ Dinner was a Micklefield memory to remember!
We have been part of this utterly magical community for over a sixth of its history. The other nine girls here tonight who were in Ms Riley’s Grade 00 class of 2017, for nearly a tenth.
And magical is not merely a marketing phrase conjured up for the 95th anniversary celebrations. It speaks to the ineffable quality of this small, unique, quirky, school. A school that is known to produce the most high-school-ready Grade 7 girls in the city. A school with a stable and enduring staff who inspire, and nurture, and cajole their charges to be the best they can be, while allowing each girl the freedom to be who they want to be. It’s a precipitous balancing act; but The Little Pink School manages it; year in, year out.
Only The Little Pink School could – running against the mores of an epoch of instant, disposable, fashion – maintain an annual tradition of constructing hats and spring bonnets. And for girls to want to compete seriously for the prize of a chocolate bar for doing so.
Only The Little Pink School could – in a hypercompetitive age – run the particular and peculiarly special sports days that it has for longer than we have been part of the school. And yet, owing to the singular (and frankly terrifying) determination of Sandi Blackbeard, be a school that punches far above its weight in school leagues.
Eight years ago, our older daughter, Sophie, finished Grade 7 at Micklefield. It was not only also the same year that Jennifer started in Grade 00, but was also the year that Ms Walker arrived at The Little Pink School as the new Grade 7 teacher. After watching Sue transform Sophie into an academically-confident learner with a deep love for English language and literature, and the reciprocated bond between Sue and her Grade 7 classes, when we realised that she was due to retire before Jennifer reached Grade 7, we implored Sue to beg the school to let her stay on for an extra two years to see Jennifer out. We take no credit for the fact that this year also marks Ms Walker’s belated leaving of Micklefield, but we are so unbelievably grateful to her – and The Little Pink School – for making it possible. Sue’s odes to her leavers have become the stuff of legend. And, deservedly so, after her performance tonight. I hope that in time this tradition becomes as part of the fabric of this institution as the spring bonnets. Sue, we wish you every happiness in the years ahead (although I am not sure that continuing teaching next year, at Forres, counts as retirement!).
Ms Waldron has schooled our daughters in Maths for two years and has also been an ongoing source of advice and counsel to them as they have navigated their way into early adulthood; and let’s acknowledge (working backwards) Ms Dollie; Ms Keeton; and a particular shoutout to Ms Steffan and Ms Meredith who dragged our girls through the nightmare that was Covid: it was a source of some PTSD to recently trawl through the school’s archive of those two years in search of material for the Grade yearbook only to find photo after unrecognisable photo of 8 and 9 year olds wearing masks; Ms Nunnely; and Ms Riley … Among the grade teachers who have taught our daughters, only Ms Vomacka is not still here.
And then there are the support staff – ALL the support staff: secretaries, music teachers, cleaners, librarians. All of you make The Little Pink School what it is; contributing to the well-being and growth of our daughters. It is perhaps invidious to single out particulars among the large number of these support staff. But Theo, Mpumzi, and Jomo: you are the smilingest, frontest-facing faces of The Little Pink School. Greeting each and every child by name every day. Knowing the names of the parents; the cars they drive; acting as last-yard couriers for forgotten lunchboxes and sports kit … With the rest of the support staff, your contributions to The Little Pink School, in small ways and big, do not go unacknowledged or unappreciated.
And leading those teachers and staff, first Ms Welgemoed; now Ms Gray. Thank you for the minds you continue to nourish; the school you continue to nurture and build.
Before offering a formal toast to Micklefield, I want to leave you – and particularly the Grade 7s – with an extract from a poem by Peter Handke, Nobel Literature Laureate in 2019, written as part of his screenplay for Wim Wenders’ 1987 film, Wings of Desire.
It’s entitled Song of Childhood.
When the child was a child,
it had, on every mountaintop,
the longing for a higher mountain yet,
and in every city,
the longing for an even greater city,
and that is still so,
It reached for cherries in topmost branches of trees
with an elation it still has today,

As we wrap up another wonderful year at Micklefield, we take a moment to bid farewell to some very special members of our community.
We say goodbye with gratitude and admiration to Mrs Walker (Grade 7 and Head of the Intersen Phase), Mrs Fargher (Learning Support), and Ms Field (Shocking Pink Director), who are all retiring after years of dedication, inspiration, and service to our school. Their passion, care, and commitment have touched countless lives, and they will be deeply missed.
We also send our very best wishes to Ms Felton (Finance), who is embarking on a new and exciting adventure.
