Scoliosis Screening will take place on Monday 21 August for girls who have signed up. Girls are please to wear their swimming costumes under their school uniforms to school.

WATER BOTTLES

Just a reminder that no glass water bottles may be used at school.  For obvious safety reasons, when these are dropped they shatter and the shards of glass go everywhere. Also, a reminder to label your daughter’s water bottle, as there is a pile of unmarked water bottles in lost property.

solar installation

We are delighted to announce that, on Thursday 17 August, we commissioned the first section of our solar and microinverter array. We even managed to produce and consume a little of our own power before the heavens opened. We have chosen a solution using microinverters for a number of reasons. These include that they

  • provide an intelligent way of maximising power output by drawing power from each individual panel,
  • allow us (and your girls) to monitor the performance of each panel,
  • are safer than traditional arrays from a fire safety point of view,
  • and will last as long as the solar panels themselves.

The array is situated above the Grade 4 and 7 classrooms. The next section above the Art room, will be commissioned next and will charge our UPS system during load shedding. The last section above the hall will be installed in the coming weeks, as stocks arrive into the country. Once our application has been approved, we will tie into the City grid.

sport & extra-murals

The 2023 sport and extra-mural programme is available on the Edana App, under Documentation.  Please check both the Term 1 and 4 (Summer) and the Term 2 and 3 (Winter) schedules when doing your planning. All information with regards to the private extra-murals on offer are available on the Edana App under Documentation, Sport/Extra-murals.  Please liaise directly with the extra-mural providers.

AN IMPORTANT REMINDER

During a netball match, substitutions can only be made at half time unless there is an injury.  During hockey matches, a system of ‘rolling substitution’ takes place which means that players can be rolled on and off the field all the time.  None of the players are reserves unless it specifically states that on the team list.  All our ‘subs’ will play, in netball, it can only be half a match, but in hockey it can be at any time and for any length of time.  It is important that we have these systems in place as injuries can occur at the match or often girls are absent on match days.  Where there are more players available in an age group, the players will rotate on match days to give everyone the opportunity to experience match situations.  The core players in these teams will be retained each week so as to give stability to the team.  A reminder to all the girls: how they practice is how they play, so we need full commitment from each player at practices.  At present, we have had a number of girls being asked to be excused from practices and cross country due to ailments.  Parents, please support us in helping to get our girls fit and upskilled so only if they are genuinely ill, excuse them, but otherwise they need to be a bit tougher and push through!  We are teaching our girls to have grit and determination, but we need the parents on board too.  Our girls/your daughters are more resilient than you think!

SPORT FOCUS

Jim Thorpe grew up with adversity. As a Native American in the early 1900’s, he faced racial prejudice and a difficult upbringing. His twin brother died at age 9. His mother and then father died just a few years later. He became an orphan.
So when somebody stole his shoes… right before he was set to compete in the Olympics, it was probably no big deal to Jim. He simply put on two other shoes that someone had tossed in a trash can. They were different sizes, though, so he had to wear extra socks on one foot to even them out. He went on to win two Olympic Gold medals.

INTERMEDIATE PHASE ARTIST OF THE WEEK: Yara Nathoo (Gr 6)
FOUNDATION PHASE ARTIST OF THE WEEK: Keira Lee Pan (Gr 3)

The focus in the Foundation Phase Assembly this week was on the attitude of Gratitude. We learnt that you will have a happier outlook on life if you focus on all the things that you are grateful for. Your days are filled with glimmers of happiness and you will appreciate them if you are on the lookout for them. These are some of the things that the Grade 1s are grateful for:

  • Ella Holbak:  I am grateful for the flowers at Micklefield.
  • Lennon Muller: I am grateful for Bridget’s dog at tennis.
  • Alice Prew: I am grateful for nature.
  • Samiqa Vermeulen: I am grateful for all my teachers.
  • Anna Bennett: I am grateful for computers.
  • Nina Vlok: I am grateful for Mrs Nunneley.
  • Aayah Mohamed: I am grateful for my cousins being at Micklefield.
  • Amaal Jaffar: I am grateful to be at Micklefield.
  • Faye Peter: I am grateful for our principal because she keeps the school running.
  • Ahlam Dramat: I am grateful that our school is doing Madagascar.
  • Emma Symons: I am grateful for my friends. They make me happy.
  • Phamna Makie: I am grateful for my school.
  • Isabelle Meiring: I am grateful that I am a Swallow.
  • Katie Gasa: I am grateful for our special big tree.
  • Yajna Haripersad: I am grateful for the animals and plants.
  • Mila Kumandan: I am grateful for our wonderful library.
Dramatic scientists trying to disprove that the Lochness monster exists!
But of course, in Drama, she does!

Grade 4s launch their robotic ships as part of their blended learning project involving Robotics, Art, and a whole lot of group work.

The young scientists in Grade 3 are enjoying demonstrating experiments using household items. This will be the highlight of our Fridays for the rest of the term as each girl has her turn to present. Last week we witnessed elephant’s toothpaste and dancing raisins and mothballs. We wonder what we’ll see next week.

We were treated to a banquet of music in Senior Assembly this week. Well done and thank you to our Shocking Pink girls and our instrumental soloists.
Back row: Alexa Burns (Flute), Leilah Joseph (Piano), Mohini Naidoo (Violin) Fron row: Liya Majal, Mila Bester and Hannah Pearson (Piano)
Imaan Mohamed performed her piano solo so beautifully in Junior Assembly. Well done!
