Sport & extra-murals

2023 Sport & Extra-Mural Programme

The 2023 sport and extra-mural programme is available on the Edana App, under Documentation.  Please check both the Term 1 and 4 (Summer) and the Term 2 and 3 (Winter) schedules when doing your planning.

WINTER SPORT PROGRAMME

Please see the Edana App under Documents, Sport/Extra-Murals for the letter with all the winter sports information and dates.  In order for the programme to run smoothly and efficiently, please follow the info on the letter.  There are a lot of logistics and many outside coaches so we need your support in making sure your daughters are at their sport practice and match correctly.

Fixtures lists for both hockey and netball are available on the Edana App.  Please be aware that the venues for netball and hockey matches are finalised between the two schools nearer the actual fixture.  Schools need to establish what facilities are available at each school and it also depends on whether the fixture has been allocated as a home or away match for each particular school.  The exact time of the matches and venues will be on the team sheets that will be sent via the class Whatsapp every Monday after practice for Netball and every Tuesday after practice for Hockey.

Please note that in netball, players may only be substituted at half time, unless there is an injury.  In hockey, we have ‘rolling subs’ as the players may be substituted at any time during the match, except in the case of a penalty/short corner.

The following teachers are on duty with each of the sports teams at practices and matches:

  • Netball: U9&U10 – Amy Dey; U11, U12, U13 – Sandi Blackbeard
  • Hockey: U9 – Bridget Vomacka; U10 – Emma Meredith; U11 practices – Sandi Blackbeard, U11 matches – Clarissa Waldron; Open (U12 & U13) – Sandi Blackbeard

Our coaches are mostly students whose primary responsibility is to coach the girls. If any issues arise on the day, please take it up with the teacher in charge who will report back to Sandi Blackbeard.

SPORT FOCUS

MATCH READY:

We have completed our first 2 weeks of matches for both netball and hockey.  In order for our girls to be ‘match ready’, they need to take on board what happens at practices and put that into play on the court/field on match day.  We always remind the girls that how you practice is how you are going to play so all effort needs to be put into training so that on match day, they leave it all out there.  They must each have given of their very best and have no regrets.  If they win, that is fantastic and if they lose, but have played to their absolute best, that is also a ‘win’.

“The more I practice, the luckier I get” – Gary Player

Regardless of a win or loss, the players must know how to win humbly and lose graciously.  This is an important value that all Micklefield girls need to follow. There is no blaming of the umpire or the opposition or their own team-mates.  Besides the skills and match play, team work is of vital importance.  Some players might have a blinder of a game and some players might have a really bad day, but because we are a team, we support each other and see how we can remedy the situation going forward.  On that note, we are thrilled to have the parent support from the sidelines.  A reminder to please cheer for ‘Micklefield’ as a collective and not individual players.  Parents are not coaches and the players need to hear clear instructions from their coaches.

Some practical measures:

  • Ensure your child knows who is lifting her to and from the venue
  • Please inform any au-pairs or other family members who may be lifting of the venue details and times
  • Please check the venue and information that comes out via your class Whatsapp so as to avoid unnecessary calls or messages
  • Please ensure that your daughter has a snack and a water bottle which they need to fill at break time, before going to the match as well as their tracksuit top or fleece.  It is part of the sport discipline that each player puts their tracksuit top or fleece on after practice and a match.  Parents, please support this!
  • No parents are allowed on the field/court or in the dugouts, please make sure your daughter has all that she needs before the match
  • If it is raining, matches are normally only canceled at 13.30, please wait for a message that will go out via the class Whatsapp group informing you of this.  No message means we are going ahead.

HOCKEY CLINIC

We will be running the following compulsory hockey clinic.  All girls who play hockey need to attend.  Our practices are not long enough to incorporate all that the girls need to learn.  These clinics are incredibly helpful as the girls also get introduced to new drills and work on different aspects of the game.

Please note that this was originally set aside for the U10s, but has been changed to the U9s.

Saturday, 3 June:

  • U9s at Micklefield from 08.30 – 10.30

The girls may wear their Phys Ed uniform or any other appropriate sport kit.  Please ensure that they have their water bottle and a snack.

weekly snapshots

The school was a hive of industry and excitement this week as we celebrated Micklefield’s 95th Birthday. The birthday love was spread in the community and the week ended with a special assembly where the Junior Choir sang “A Very Happy UNbirthday”, each grade presented their outreach activities to the whole school, and the Birthday cake was cut!

I hope that Micklefield lives a long and happy life. – Faye Peter (Gr 1)

letter of thanks from avondrust

Your little ones in Grade 1  sang to us this morning here at Avondrust and their programme was a wonderful success. The teachers were charming, kind, competent, musical and the children loved them.  The children themselves were very polite and looked good and sang beautifully.  We were very privileged to have them visit us.

The gifts of cards and flowers were greatly appreciated, especially by those here who do not have many family people or friends to encourage them. I think that everyone who could move at all was brought in from Frail Care because there was a forest of wheel-chairs and an army of nurses to help them. The children moved among us very gently and politely – and were simply lovely!  Micklefield can be proud of them.

At least two of us living here are old Micklefield girls. One of my daughters was a Micklefielder, so the connections are all there.

Thank you for arranging this, and please, somehow, tell the parents how lovely their flowers were – that was a generous gesture indeed. Most of the flowers have gone to the people in Frail Care where they give great joy.

Yours sincerely

Margaret Elsworth (Blagden)
