WATER BOTTLES

Just a reminder that no glass water bottles may be used at school.  When these are dropped they shatter and the shards of glass go everywhere posing an obvious safety hazard. Also, a reminder to label your daughter’s water bottle, as there is a pile of unmarked water bottles in lost property.

SPORT FOCUS

Article: Why You Should Encourage Your Kids To Be Multi-Sport Athletes written by Nick Buonocore (Parent, Volunteer Coach, & Founder of The Reformed Sports Project)

There are many benefits to multi-sport development, on and off the field of play. Multi-sport experience supports cognitive, social, and emotional development as kids are exposed to new environments, new coaches, new teammates, new rules, and new sport cultures. Multi-sport development also helps with motor skills and physical fitness. Many of the college coaches I’ve interviewed have said that their best players are the athletes who played multiple sports in school. It can also reduce the risk of burnout and overuse injuries, which seem to be more prevalent than ever. Finally, multi-sport opportunities provide an environment for kids to try different things and figure out what they like. Just because you and your husband or wife love soccer doesn’t mean your kid will. Just because your kid’s favorite sport at seven is softball doesn’t mean she might grow to love lacrosse more by 14. Providing opportunities for multi-sport experience can help your kids learn about themselves, grow in different ways, and build a strong sense of self.

Many youth sports athletes don’t end up playing high school sports and far fewer make it to college. Only a miniscule amount become professional athletes, and many professional athletes grew up playing multiple sports! While I am not saying that early sport specialization can’t make sense for anyone, I am confident it doesn’t make sense for the overwhelming majority of our kids. What is best for the overwhelming majority of our kids should be what the youth sports system is focused on, instead of the one-in-a-million stories like Venus and Serena or Tiger Woods.

weekly snapshots

The saying goes that Micklefield School girls always punch above their weight.  This was certainly true for Shocking Pink on Tuesday evening 22 August when they proudly took the stage at Christ Church Constantia, alongside the globally acclaimed Cape Town Camerata.  This was not a competition but a celebration of vocal music.  Thank you to our warmly responsive audience who braved stormy winter weather to share the big occasion with us.  It was an inspiring musical education for Shocking Pink as they listened with wide-eyed awe to the young adults of the Camerata. Lorna Field (Director Shocking Pink)
