WEEKLY UPDATE

Stop & Go

In order to ease traffic congestion at peak morning drop off times, we have a Stop and Go system in place in Wood Road. We kindly request that vehicles are stopped for just enough time for the girls to get out of the car safely, and for the vehicle to move on swiftly. Please do not get out of the car to assist with bags or say goodbye as this causes a back-up of traffic. Thank you for your assistance with this.

SPORT FOCUS

Learning Accountability through Sports – November 25, 2022

It is vital that our kids learn the importance and value of accountability, and it’s absolutely critical that we, as parents, help them do so.

Nobody is perfect, and everyone makes mistakes, so accountability is important for all of us and just like most skills, accountability is best learned at a young age – and that’s the beauty of youth sports. Youth sports gives kids the opportunity to learn accountability in a low pressure, supportive environment and gives parents the opportunity to help their kids learn and value accountability in an environment in which mistakes are frequent and (should be) inconsequential. It is natural for kids to make excuses for themselves and their actions, but it’s critical that parents hold their kids accountable. It’s important to make the distinction here that when I say hold your kids accountable, I do not mean accountable to their sport performance results. I couldn’t care less if my kid lets in four goals as the goalie but if she’s a poor sport after the game to her teammates or the opposing team because of it, I will certainly hold her accountable for her behavior.

I understand it’s not necessarily natural to hold your kids accountable because as parents, we seem programmed to try to make things easier for our kids so that they’ll have the path of least resistance to success, and it is counterintuitive to think that adversity and failure in the short term can help foster long term growth. Yet, we need to resist the urge to soften the blow for our kids, regardless of how much we love them because accountability, adversity, and failure build resilience, responsibility, and growth in the long run. I firmly believe that holding our kids accountable and preparing them for the path is a sign of how much we love our kids because while it may be hard for them in the moment, it will benefit them throughout their lives.

If we go back to the example of my kid being a bad teammate because of a poor on-field performance, I must also support the coach when he or she disciplines my daughter. Again, I can’t soften the blow, and I also shouldn’t immediately jump to my kid’s defense. Kids need to learn that more people than just their parents will have expectations of them (e.g. teachers, bosses, colleagues, and spouses) and how valuable criticism and feedback from others can be in all aspects of their lives.

Youth sports provides an incredible opportunity for our kids to start learning accountability from a young age. They can learn to be accountable to their teammates, to their coaches, to their parents, and to themselves.

A glimpse of some of the behind-the-scenes preparation for Madagascar.

WOW, what an amazing first ever Bling Day at Micklefield this past week.  The girls had so much fun collecting, sorting, counting, planning, designing and creating their amazing birthday themed coin designs.  The judges had a very hard time choosing the most creative design from all the amazing unique designs on display…  in the end the decision was made and our winners got a special treat of doughnuts to enjoy:

  • The  most creative design in Foundation Phase went to Grade 0
  • The most creative design in Senior Phase went to Grade 4
  • Special mention to Grade 3s for collecting the most coins.

A total of R7,192 was raised, and will go towards our Micklefield Bursary Fund. A very BIG thank you to all parents, girls and teachers who helped make our BLING DAY the amazing success it was.
