weekly update

Fundraising Committee

We are looking to form a fundraising committee for Micklefield. We hope that parents who are keen to contribute their ideas, expertise, and networks will step forward. Please contact Joanne joanne@micklefield.co.za if you are interested.

HEALTHY LUNCHES

A reminder that only healthy lunches and drinks are allowed – no sweets, chips, fizzy drinks etc are permitted. Please note that this includes all energy drinks, and most especially Prime drink most recently made available on the market. Thank you for your co-operation with this.

Lost Property

In the hopes of reducing the number of items that land up in lost and found as well as saving a penny here and there. Please take a few moments this weekend to label their clothing items so that it’s easier for the Tree Huggers in Grade 5 to return it to the girls, as this is part of their weekly classroom duties. If the items are not labeled and we can’t locate it’s owner then the item will make its way to the second-hand clothing store.

School Uniform

Girls are to wear grey (not white) socks with their grey trousers and the pink winter shirt is not to be tucked into the skirt or trousers.

COLLECTION OF GRADE 3-7 PUPILS ON MONDAYS:

From Monday, 8 May and going forward for the rest of Term 2 and 3, every Monday afternoon, the pick-up point for all Grade 3-7 pupils who do not play netball or have any other extra-mural on campus, will be at the Sandown Road gate at 14.30.  Please note that parents need to park in Lea Road or surrounding roads, not in Wood Road in order to collect at 14.30 on Mondays.

There will be a large 60-seater Springbok Atlas bus parked outside the main entrance every Monday from 14.00 to take the Grade 5, 6, and 7 girls to netball practice.  This bus needs space to be able to exit Wood Road at 14.30 and take our girls to RGHS.

Girls who can workshops

A number of 8-week workshops are being offered by GIRLS WHO CAN throughout May and June months. The details of these workshops can be found on the Edana App under Documentation.

SPORT & EXTRA-MURALS

2023 Sport & Extra-Mural Programme

The 2023 sport and extra-mural programme is available on the Edana App, under Documentation.  Please check both the Term 1 and 4 (Summer) and the Term 2 and 3 (Winter) schedules when doing your planning.

PRIVATELY RUN EXTRA-MURALS: ALL GRADES (00 – 7)

All information with regards to the private extra-murals on offer are available on the Edana App under Documentation, Sport/Extra-murals.  Please liaise directly with the extra-mural providers.

TENNIS LESSONS:

For private tennis lessons, please find the BVTS Micklefield Tennis Academy information in the Adana App under Documentation, Sport/Extra-murals.  We are wanting one coaching style for our girls so we can build our teams to be strong and competitive.

WINTER SPORT PROGRAMME

Please see the Edana App under Documents, Sport/Extra-Murals for the letter with all the winter sports information and dates.  In order for the programme to run smoothly and efficiently, please follow the info on the letter.  There are a lot of logistics and many outside coaches so we need your support in making sure your daughters are at their sport practice and match correctly.

Fixture lists for both hockey and netball are available on the Edana App.  Please be aware that the venues for netball and hockey matches are finalised between the two schools nearer the actual fixture.  Schools need to establish what facilities are available at each school and it also depends on whether the fixture has been allocated as a home or away match for each particular school.  The exact time of the matches and venues will be on the team sheets that will be sent via the class Whatsapp every Monday after practice for Netball and every Tuesday after practice for Hockey.

SPORT FOCUS

This will be the first week of match selection.  Please see the article written by Mary Ann Dove, www.positivesportparent.com.  Please support us in encouraging your daughter no matter which team she is selected for.  It is the start of the season and the coaches are getting to know the girls, their strengths and weaknesses so teams and positions will possibly change, nothing is cast in stone.

CROSS COUNTRY GRADE 1 – 7

Cross Country information is available on the Edana App.  The cross country race for Friday, 12 May is at Zwaanswyk Academy in Retreat.  All names must be sent to Sandi Blackbeard by Thursday, 11 May. All runners must meet at the venue at 14.30.  Further information will be sent once received.

Well done to all our girls from Grade 1 -7 who did their first timed cross country practice on Wednesday.  Every girl has been given a QR code and is scanned on their return to school from their run. They will be aiming to better their own time each week.

Congratulations to our very own Coach Jade (U10 hockey and cross country) who has been selected to referee at the Atlantic Youth Touch Rugby World Cup 2023 which will be held in Nottingham, England in July. Jade is one of 6 referees chosen from South Africa.
Congratulations to Andisa Hlanza, our Gr R Teaching Assistant & Aftercare Supervisor, on her Graduation with a Gr R Diploma from CPUT. We are so proud of you, Andisa!

The girls enjoyed some delicious treats that are found on almost any table of a Muslim, in Cape Town, during the month of Ramadan. Salmah Bray enlightened the girls about what it means to fast and the importance of self-restraint during this month. The girls mostly enjoyed getting their hands painted with henna and an intricate design of their choice.

We have been exploring eggs as a theme in Grade 0. This week the girls have found many snails in the garden as well as snail eggs. We have watched tiny snails hatching from the eggs. We have also discovered that snails eat many things, even cardboard!

Thank you to Catherine Davidge and Mila Bester for their beautiful piano performances in Senior Assembly on 21 April.
We were delighted to hear beautiful guitarist and ukulele performances in senior assembly on 5 May.
Well done to our young stars: Courtney Viljoen, Emily van Coeverden de Groot (Guitar) and Lia Southgate (Ukulele) as well as their teacher: Mr Alexandros Vavatzanidis.

Grade 1s persevered through challenging Khan Academy Kids tasks in Computers, this week!
