There was a sprinkle of sparkle in the air at the Summer Picnic. The Micklefield community came together for the official launch of the Leading Edge Media Centre and to celebrate our much-loved Headmistress, Jeannette Welgemoed. It was a special evening indeed with an incredible music lineup and guest appearances. A huge thank you to all who joined in the happy celebrations. The fantastic sum of just over R52 000 was raised for our outside classroom.
The Grade 7s started their year of leadership development with a 3 day camp at Rocklands. Through various collaborative activities they formed their portfolio committees for the year and elected their Executive Leadership Committee for Term 1:
Jada Martin [captain]; Mia Willoughby; Sophia Trout; Gabi Laubscher
This term Robins and the other two houses took time and effort to prepare for the Valentine’s Day Bake Sale. We laid out tables, bought decorations and made many delicious treats. In total, we raised a whopping R4281! This, you could say, was because of teamwork. Just like the bake sale, Cross Country was also a major success. When we were tired we pushed through, kept our headspaces motivated and were encouraging and supportive of our teammates. The next day was Sports Day, and we got our team to scream their lungs out, which was exactly what was needed to win the Spirit Cup! Written by Jada Martin
Zinathi Mkosi [captain]; Madison Welman; Caprese Catz; Caitlyn Kluckow
This term, the Kingfisher house captains took part in the Valentine’s Day Bake Sale. We decorated the tables and sold some delicious treats for the girls to enjoy. We were overjoyed that we raised R4281! Cross Country was loads of fun, and even though we came last, we displayed a lot of spirit. On Sports Day the Kingfishers had amazing spirit and did well in all their races. At the end of the day we won Sports Day, which made us very proud. We ended our day with the amazing hats parade which were absolutely beautiful. Written by Zinathi Mkosi
Isla MacNaughton [captain]; Sophia Pooley; Yara Jaga; Sian Bennewith
This term all the house captains took part in the Valentine’s Day bake sale. We sold things from cupcakes and brownies to mini pizzas and lamingtons. For the Cross Country and Sports Day events, Swallows were placed 2nd. Although we didn’t come first, we still had lots of fun and showed compassion and spirit towards our house. We felt that the house captains put together a very good march. Most Swallows were very excited about it, and on the day, I think it was a big success. Written by Isla MacNaughton
Zoë Eedes [head]; Anathi Banjatwa; Heidi Nolte; Unarine Malada
This term, the Outreach Committee helped with the Valentine’s Day Bake Sale, run by the house captains. We went to the Rondebosch Police Station to deliver cakes and cards. It felt good to let other people know that what they were doing was good as they were helping their community. On leadership camp we learnt about ourselves and when we worked on the Outreach poster, we decided to use our strengths to help others and make this Outreach Committee the best Micklefield has ever had. Written by Zoë Eedes
Lily Yazbek [head]; Rebecca Eedes; Thanah Isaacs; Tabitha Porter
This past term the Pastoral Committee decorated the staffroom for Valentine’s Day. We put out flowers, hung up bunting and made handmade cards for all teachers and staff. The staffroom looked beautiful with all of the decorations and the staff were pleased with their cards. One of our roles as Pastoral Committee members is to mediate any friendship issues or problems that may arise, and we are on duty during break times to offer help in this regard. We feel that, as a committee, we have made a positive contribution to the Micklefield community. Written by Lily Yazbek
Scarlett Turck [head] Zara Ebrahim; Charlotte de la Cour; Grace Wilkinson
This term, the Cultural Committee has presented in two assemblies. On Valentine’s Day we presented a fun play explaining the history of Saint Valentine. In this play we got a few volunteers from the younger grades to help us. I think that it was a fun learning experience for everyone. The second presentation was when it was International Women’s Day. For this assembly, we gave a speech about why, when, who and where Women’s Day originated. Written by Scarlett Turck
The Grade 3s enjoyed a wonderful morning exploring ‘Wendy’s Wild and Wonderful Garden’. They focused their attention on exploring insect habitats and were encouraged to think about what small creatures need in order to live in a garden. They created habitats for their creatures and then hunted under rocks and leaves, and even in the compost heap to find insects and other small creatures. They refreshed their knowledge on the characteristics of insects as they decided if the creatures they found were insects, arachnids or something completely different. The highlight of the experience was the opportunity to examine the creatures that they found under a microscope with the image projected onto the TV screen. It was fascinating to see a snail egg, the patterns on a slug and the segments of an earthworm. Their teacher was impressed by the bravery of girls who held an insect for the first time.
Camp was certainly the highlight of the term for our Grade 5 learners! There were obstacle courses, water games, a fashion show, just to name a few of the incredible team activities that brought this amazing class closer together. Communication skills and learning to better understand each other were the focus of this camp. The memories made here will undoubtedly last a lifetime!
The Grade 00s have settled into their New Big School Routine and are off to a great start on their Micklefield journey! They are having happy, fun-filled days at school. They are making friends and embracing all that is on offer.
The Grade 6 camp was full of excitement. This was our first camp as a class. We went to a camp called Bonamanzi Adventures near Worcester. We were greeted by amazing camp guides named Blessing and Bryan. We were sorted into 4 teams: pink, purple, blue and orange. Each team had to work together to complete different tasks. We also got to go river rafting and had to try challenges while on the water. We had to take responsibility for our belongings and we had to clean our dishes. We did a night hike and learnt about the stars and other cool things. We had a talk about water filtering and how they clean the water for us to drink. We spent the last night having a bonfire, dancing and singing songs and just having a blast. The last day, we packed up and headed off back to school. Camp was a blast! We had the best time together as a class. Our relationship as a class is even stronger! Written by Liya Lentsa, Jamie Henchie & Simrah Ally
The Grade 0s have explored 3 exciting themes this term – Under the Sea, Shapes and My Family and I. Exploration, learning with our whole bodies through movement and space is the best way for pre-school children to internalise concepts. We used stilts to walk the sides and diagonals of a rectangle and made hexagons with our bodies. Each girl showed a family photograph for show and tell and shared their self knowledge of their special families. What a diverse group we have!
Our Personal museum was about ourselves and our families. We interviewed special people, we wrote up our timelines and found artifacts. It was a fun experience and interesting to learn about ourselves and our families. We loved looking at our friends baby photo’s! It was a great project and our classroom looked fantastic.
We kept the house point spirit going throughout the term as we completed a General Knowledge quiz in our houses to boost the total number of house points!
On Saturday, 5 March we had a wonderful Sports Day with great spirit and a lot of action out on the track! Congratulations to the Kingfishers (161) who finished first overall with the Swallows (157) second and the Robins (133), third! The cross country races for Grade 3-7 took place the day before on Friday, 4 March, and the results were as follows: 1st – Robins (19), 2nd – Swallows (18), 3rd Kingfishers (15). The Fancy Hat Parade also took place on Friday and the hats were shown off on Saturday. They were spectacular as always!
The annual Inter-Schools Competitions take place against the other seven girls’ schools – RGJS, Herschel, Springfield, St Cyprians, WGJS, Greenfield and Oakhurst.
Four of our players took part in this tournament which was held at Springfield on Thursday, 10 March. Our A couple, Lyndsey Philipps and Sian Bennewith finished 3rd overall and our B couple finished 5th in their section.

Our gala team from U10 – Open took part in this competition held at the Herschel Senior School pool on Monday, 14 March. Our girls did exceptionally well for the only school without their own pool! Special congratulations to Sophia Trout who won the 50m Butterfly event!
Drama this term was a mixture of fun and hard work depending what grade you were in. The Grade 7 class is hard at work rehearsing a play called “At First I was Afraid…” about a young girl on the brink of going to High School and how she has to overcome her fears. And then Covid hits….. This is being produced in collaboration with the Traverse Theatre and Wonder Fools Organisation in Scotland who started an initiative called Positive Stories in Negative Times to encourage young theatre and drama groups around the world to take to the stage again post Covid. Mrs G has signed up the Grade 7 class to take part. The play will be filmed but also performed for the school body at the end of May next term.
The other grades created dramas around stories about the sea and the beach. Dolphin Boy, The Singing Mermaid, Seal and Tidddler, were some of the stories used. Poetry was also used to work on articulation and projection as the wearing of masks has made us lazy speakers.
The Micklefield Market was a fantastic community-building and fundraising event. Thank you to the parents and staff for all their hard work and generous donations in making the event such a successful and happy occasion – it is good to be able to host school events again!
The Micklefield Market was a wonderful experience for all the Grade 6 Entrepreneurs. The class sold many items to raise money and awareness for their organisations. There were slushies, spraying your hair for cancer, food items, sweets and beautiful indoor plants for sale. As a class, we learnt the value of preparing in advance, the challenges and the excitement of having a stall at the Market and how to deal with tricky customers. We are thrilled with our efforts and are thankful for everyone’s support. We know that our organisations are going to benefit from the money that we have raised. We appreciate the great support from our Micklefield community!
We say our fond farewells to Mrs Keshma Patel, IN/SEN HOD and Grade 6 Teacher, and wish her well as she embarks on the next exciting phase of her career. Thank you, Keshma, for all you have done for Micklefield over the past 7 years, your contribution has been significant and we will miss you!
