Micklefield celebrates its 94th birthday this year. The school took on the challenge of knitting 94 beanies for the “Beanies for Bridges” initiative for vulnerable teenagers at the Bridges Retreat Centre in Franshoek. In true Micklefield style, the entire community became involved and an incredible total of 529 beanies were knitted. During our birthday week, each grade gave back to the community in their own special way and the week ended off with cupcakes for all. Happy Birthday, Micklefield!
Term 3 has been a busy term filled with lots of fun, exploring and learning. The outing to be.UP Park was a highlight! The Grade 00s have been learning lots of new skills and enjoying happy days of playing. They have learnt about caring for pets and are becoming brilliant puzzle builders and problem solvers when using their perceptual activities.
This term the Grade 0s have explored themes about winter; day and night and light and dark. They built double bubble thinking maps comparing different sources of light; looked at some old black and white photographs and painted their own family photograph mixing different shades of grey.
What fun was had doing some Maths problem solving with sugar snap peas. Sugar snap peas have since been seen in lunch boxes as a new favourite snack! The Grade 0s have explored ALL the letters of the alphabet. They used sensory experiences to consolidate their learning, like writing in the sandpit/shaving foamor building letters with playdough. ‘P’ is for popcorn, picks and pizza. The girls made their own constructions using toothpicks, popcorn and polystyrene pizza bases.
The Grade 2s visited the Cape Town Science Centre and engaged in a Transport workshop. The girls loved the hands-on learning experience
and thoroughly enjoyed exploring the centre’s exhibits. They had lots of fun!
The Grade 3s got in touch with nature on their recent outing to the Alphen Trail. The guides helped them to explore their environment with a specific focus on plants and the growth of seeds in spring. The highlights of the excursion were finding and eating wild sorrel, making a journey stick and planting their own seeds in decorated pots. Mrs Steffen loved watching the girls explore nature, try new things and respond with wonderment and awe.
The girls enjoyed showing their parents all they have learnt this term. They dressed up as their Titanic passenger and presented a programme of keynotes, diaries, mondelings and songs in the hall. In the class, parents had a Kahoot quiz to check how well they had listened and looked at all the work that Grade 4 had completed. The girls concluded their Project Based Learning topic of the Titanic with an oral about a particular passenger, and dressed up as their passengers.
At Micklefield, our girls aren’t afraid of getting dirty! When it comes to saving the Earth, there is nothing we won’t do. That includes diving into our bins and assisting with an Environmental audit, offered by Plant The Seed. The Grade 5 class spent time sorting the weekly waste into categories, based on its ability to be recycled, in an effort to better understand the type of waste our school generates. Plant The Seed will analyse the information and come up with a strategy to help turn Micklefield into a more environmentally friendly school.
The Earth is a truly fascinating place, made up of many layers. The Grade 5s zoomed in during an investigation this term, learning about which soil type retains the most water and why.
The Grade 6s spent 3 meaningful sessions with Jessica Masson from Growing Space who ran a Drama Therapy workshop. She covered important concepts such as building a group bond, trust and connection, exploring emotion and empathy and building resilience and skills to manage difficult situations. The girls thoroughly enjoyed expressing themselves in a safe space and contributed meaningfully to the workshop.
Earlier this term, the Grade 7 class visited ‘My Green Home’ which is an installation of a home that won an eco-home sustainability competition last year. Mary Quinn was our tour guide, and she gave us much insight into how we can improve our homes to become more eco friendly and how to make our homes more sustainable. After the visit we finished off the morning with a delightful treat at Bootleggers. Written by Jada Martin.
TERM 3 LEADERSHIP REPORTS
By Rebecca Eedes (Grade 7)
I drink from the goblet
Liquid gold
Gold of the Gods,
In its silky folds
I drink from the vial
Of the clearest glass
“Free from preservatives”
Of the highest class
I open the Bible, Quran, Torah and Veda
And even though in many languages
They all say the same,
Words of two humans and the creation of the world
A man’s claim to fame
I open a textbook
Full of knowledge and wisdom
So much information,
Words of evolution, a big bang
A peek at our education
I ask the Priest, Imam, Cohen and Pujari
“Why do you do what you do?”
With a smile on their face, they don’t hesitate to say:
“When God came to me, I knew”
I ask the scientist
“Why do you do what you do?”
They think with a puzzled look, but finally, say:
“Science was always the answer, I knew”
Now that I’ve read, drank and asked, I finally know
The answer won’t be clear until I go.
On the 20th of September, Ms. Walker, Mrs. Howie, and the Grade 7 class went to the Iziko Slave Lodge Museum in town, to learn about the slavery in the Cape during the 17 century. Our guide, Mr. Gadezweni, showed us around the museum and told us all about the architecture, the rules slaves had to follow, and the impact the slave trade had on our people. It saddened me deeply that people had to endure this type of suffering. Afterwards, we went to the Company Gardens for a bite to eat, and then returned to school. The outing gave us further insight into the past of our people, and was an excellent learning experience. Written by Heidi Nolte

AN EVENING OF VOCAL MUSIC
Shocking Pink hosted an intimate concert at Micklefield on Monday 12 September. We invited professional musicians, Olga Leonard and Babette Viljoen, to feature as guest artists and four of our past Shocking Pink members returned to Micklefield to present solo items. After a long break from the stage, Sibulele Sodayise, Paballo Mphepya, Buhle Lekoma and Zoë West gave the occasion the sense of a Shocking Pink reunion.
Woodworx Marimbas invited our Grades 5, 6 and 7 bands to participate in the Cape Town Big Band Jazz Festival on Saturday 17 September. Our Micklefield girls did us proud, dressed up as fairies, performing at the Baxter Theatre alongside 19 other schools, including high schools. The energy was electric, this despite load shedding schedules which did affect part of the programme. Our final massed item was the National Anthem, Nkosi Sikilele iAfrika. Thank you to the incredible team of teachers, and especially to Toni-Rae Adams and Grant Adams, for inspiring our girls!
Our Micklefield musicians entered the Western Cape Virtual Eisteddfod and did so well! We are very proud of our musicians for these fine accomplishments.

The INTER-SCHOOLS TOURNAMENTS are played against the other 7 girls’ schools who are all members of the PGSGU (Peninsula Girls’ Sport and Games Union).
The Open A and B teams took part in the PGSGU Inter-Schools Hockey Tournament on Tuesday, 20 September and Wednesday, 21 September respectively. Our girls played exceptionally well and made us proud with the A team finishing 5th and the B team finishing 3rd
On Wednesday, 14 September our U12A and U13A netball teams participated in the PGSGU Inter-Schools Netball Tournament, held at Oakhurst. Both teams raised the level of their play with great results against strong opposition. The U12As finished 5th overall and the U13As were 4th overall.
On Friday, 23 September, our Grade 4 – 7 runners took part in the PGSGU Inter-Schools Cross Country held at RGHS. A number of our runners were unable to take part due to illness and injury which made it more challenging, but our girls gave their best, finishing 5th overall.
We celebrated Heritage Day with activities throughout the school. The girls were treated to a braai sausage and roasted marshmallows and Rooibos tea was on offer too. Our South Africa-themed civvies day added extra ‘gees’ to the celebrations.
