Term 4 began with our annual 5km walk at the beautiful De Grendel Estate. Thank you to everyone who joined us and supported our fundraiser. The weather held, the views were magnificent and great fun was had by all. Thanks to all the generous donations we raised R50 000 for our school bus!
The Micklefield Class of 2017 joined us for their Matric Reunion Tea before writing their final matric exams. It was a happy afternoon of girls, parents and staff coming together to share fond memories of primary school days. We wish them every happiness and success as they step out into the world.
Campouts made a comeback this year and there were plenty of happy campers amongst the Grades 1-4 girls. There is nothing quite like a sleepover at school and the events were thoroughly enjoyed by all who attended!
Congratulations to our General Knowledge Team for achieving second place in the final round of the Peninsula Inter-Schools General Knowledge Quiz, hosted at Bishops Preparatory School. It was a spirited evening with 10 teams from various schools competing. The team, comprising of Grade 6s and 7s, were awarded medals and The Runner Up Owl Trophy. Well done girls on this amazing achievement!
The Grade 5s and 6s enjoyed a magical evening with their dads. A special time was had by all whilst busting a move and picnicking on pizza.
The Grade 00 and 0 classes have had a wonderful time engaging in fantasy play through their theme on Fairies and Princesses. They have learnt that the best qualities of a true princess are kindness, love and respect, and that a true princess can follow her dreams. The highlight was a wonderful evening of Twilight Tales. Gilly Southwood, our storyteller, once again had the girls hanging on every word!
The Grade 0 class have been exploring Spring and Life Cycles. They raised their own silkworms from eggs to moths and applied their knowledge of sequencing through art and flow maps. A professor from Impact Education came to talk to us about life cycles. She gave a slide show and then they created our own pond and ‘grew’ a life cycle of a frog.
The Grade 00 class read stories about growth and life cycles and their silkworms provided hours of entertainment and visual learning. They grew beans in jars and watched them grow roots and shoots until they were big enough to plant in the garden.
The Grade 1 class hosted their annual Open Day this November and parents were treated to some hearty singing in English, Afrikaans and Xhosa as well as some sweet sounds on the recorder and violin. Each of the girls proudly received a class award. Well done to our Grade 1s, and thank you to the parents for their support this year.
The Foundation Phase were treated to a performance of the book “Mr Hare Meets Mr Mandela”, a wonderful tale about learning from our mistakes, about our South African money, and the importance of reading. What a treat it was to see the book come alive in a live show.
The Grade 2s have enjoyed learning and researching about Celebrations around the World. They have made a variety of crafts, designed a poster on CANVA and presented orals about Celebrations. They loved dressing up as a character for the Grade 7 Dress-Up Day! The girls have every reason to be proud of their achievements this term.
The Grade 3 class were treated to perfect weather on their trip to the top of Table Mountain. For many of them it was their first cable car ride and they enjoyed the excitement of the views from the revolving car. They enjoyed learning some interesting facts from their guide, Tony, but were sad not to get to see any dassies.
The Grade 3 girls, some of their parents, Mr Daraza, Miss Kerven and Mrs Steffen, enjoyed a beautiful hike from Constantia Nek to Kirstenbosch. This outing doubled as their end of year party and they had a picnic and treats in the garden before heading back to school.
The Grade 4 class had a great time learning and looking at all the interesting facts and artefacts at the museum. The class watched a movie about the best place to live in the Solar System. We also had a little tour with our teacher around the museum. The Grade 4 class used ourselves to compare our size to the biggest Sahara crocodile. We learnt about jellyfish, dinosaurs, space and so much more. Written by Leah Pietersen, Noor Bray, and Samiha Ally.
At the end of the term, the Grade 5 class focused their efforts on creating a catapult worthy of winning the elastic energy competition. We stretched….we aimed….we fired! And, we ate lots of marshmallows.
Our new girls and families were welcomed to Micklefield at the New Girls’ Tea. The Grade 6s were very excited to step into the role of Big Girls and make the Little Girls feel part of the family. Thank you to the Grade 00 parents for providing such a delicious spread!
The Grade 4 and 5 girls looked like “real” drama students in their “acting blacks” (black t-shirts and leggings) as they performed their solo and group mimes this term. Mime is an important acting skill to learn as one relies on movement and facial expression in order to tell a story. Body language is very powerful!
The Grade 6 girls enjoyed performing a duologue from Oscar Wilde’s well-known play, “The Importance of Being Earnest”. This comedy offered the girls an opportunity for characterisation from a time unfamiliar to them and to dress up too!
Seven drama students entered the Trinity College Speech and Drama Exams this year and their results are extremely gratifying. Well done girls!

The state of Drama at Micklefield is very healthy which bodes well for 2023!
Surrounded by beautiful displays of art, the Music and Art Evenings presented a special opportunity for our Grades 4 to 7 girls to showcase their talents to the delight of live audiences. Our young presenters added their voices to this sense of occasion. There was a variety of instruments on show: piano, singing, ukulele, guitar, violin, cello, recorder and flute. The marimba bands, led by Toni-Rae and Grant Adams (from Woodworx Marimbas), concluded the Grades 5 to 7 programmes on a very happy note. Thank you to everyone who contributed to the success and celebration of our musicians!
We are so proud of our musicians’ accomplishments at the Trinity College London External Instrumental and Theory Music Examinations.

Here are some of the highlights of the Grade 7s final term at Micklefield.
On Thursday 24th November, the class went on an outing to the Save our Seas Education Centre in Dalebrook. We started off indoors in their indoor classroom to learn about and discuss the inter-tidal zones, and after our tidal pool exploration, we returned to the centre to listen to a presentation on sharks. We were shown jaws of different sharks and got to hold dried shark eggs (sacks). We then went down to the tidal pool to observe the different organisms that can be found in the rock pools. We saw a collection of sea stars, seaweed, urchins and anemones. We ended the outing by having brunch at Dalebrook Cafe and dipping our feet in the tidal pool. Written by Charlotte de la Cour
This term, a few Grade 7s were selected to take part in the Maths Relay. The event took place in the hall and several other schools were invited to participate. We were separated into groups with other schools and competed by solving maths problems. It lasted about an hour and there were about 15 teams. There were questions ranging in difficulty and point count, 10 points being the easiest and 30 being the hardest. It was such fun working with other intelligent minds. Written by Rebecca Eedes
The House Plays have been an event at Micklefield for a few years, but sadly it hasn’t been able to take place for quite a while due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This year the Grade 7s of 2022 were determined to make it a big hit. Mrs G gave us the topic ‘It’s a Strange Strange World’ and we were tasked with basing our plays on this topic. Each house was responsible for the entire production process, including creating a script and programme, coming up with music, lights and costumes, and of course, bringing our plays to life on the stage. Everyone gave it their all and all three plays were an amazing success. Written by Thanah Isaacs. The awards were as follows:
The Grade 7 girls and moms enjoyed a Mums and Daughters Tea to mark the end of our Grade 7 journey and say a special thank you to our wonderful teacher, Ms Walker. Grace’s mom hosted us in their beautiful garden. The table was filled with delicious treats and it was bittersweet to realise that this was the last time that the moms would have a get-together like this. Now we are all gearing up for the last few events and getting ready to leave Micklefield. Written by Zara Ebrahim
The Rondebosch Social was a very enjoyable evening for everyone. There was a dance battle and a very cool photo booth. There was also a tent with beanbags and that was great to just chill in. It was very enjoyable as we could just wander around and do what we felt like. I think we all thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. It was fun interacting with all the other schools – good practise for next year. Overall, it was a great experience. Written by Scarlett Turck
On Saturday 26th November, the Grade 7s had their final event of the year to say goodbye to the school. The girls, the parents and the staff gathered at Micklefield all dressed glamorously to celebrate the 9 years we spent at Micklefield.
Spring was the theme of the evening as the hall was decorated in colourful lights and hanging decor, the music held a lot of the evening together. There was delicious food, great speeches and the evening closed joyously as we all gathered on the stage and danced till late.
We all had the time of our lives and will forever remember the evening as a wonderful goodbye to the school as well as each other. Written by Grace Willkinson
Congratulations to the following girls for their achievements in the following areas:
The Grade 00 & 0 girls put on a spectacular end-of-year concert! Each girl was so brave, some being on stage for the very first time. They sang their hearts out and each played a special role. Thank you to Robyn Hobbs and her team for the stunning costumes.
The Grade 1 to Grade 3s took to the stage at the end of the term performing the wonderful story “Namaqualand Magic”, the Khoisan Legend about the annual rebirth of the Namaqualand flowers. The stage was filled with colourful butterflies, bees, flowers and blossoms, watered by the rain. But one vain girl angered the praying mantis, causing the winds to come and the land to dry up. Only when she admitted the error of her ways could the villagers return to their land and the flowers magically rebloomed. The girls were amazing!
The traditional year-end Teachers vs Grade 7 Rounders was played with great gusto and supporters cheered enthusiastically from the sidelines. It was a fiercely competitive match between the Teachers’ team Flower Power and Grade 7s’ team Pirates and Princesses with a final score of 19 – 15 to the Teachers!
Audrey and the staff would like to thank the Micklefield Family for all their contributions to the school this year. It has been a year filled with happy moments that our girls will hold in their hearts forever.
Fond farewells to the Grade 7s of 2022. We wish you success and happiness in all your endeavors and as the newest graduates of Micklefield Past Pupils – please stay in touch!
We would like to wish all our Christian families a Happy Christmas and everyone a relaxing holiday and a special time of sharing together with family and friends.
