The Micklefield art exhibition showcased the beautiful art created by all of our girls. The exhibition was divided into three categories, the exhibition of the girls’ individual artworks, a group artwork created by each class as well as artworks created by members of the Micklefield community. In addition to the exhibition, we held a silent auction, which included all the group artworks created by each class as well as some of the artworks created by members of the Micklefield community. We would like to thank every artist who generously participated in our exhibition. It was a pleasure seeing the artworks that were created by everyone in the community.
Micklefield Girls received excellent results in the Cape Town Art Eisteddfod and the Kaapse Afrikaanse Art Eisteddfod this year.
We are very proud of Maryam Vallie who received second place in the drawing and painting category, Grade 2 and 3, in the Cape Town Art Eisteddfod. This is an extraordinary achievement. Well done, Maryam.
The Cape Town Creative Writing Eisteddfod 2023 gave our girls the opportunity to showcase their incredible writing talent. Collectively, the Grade 5, 6, and 7 girls achieved 10 x High Honours, 20 x Honours, and 6 x High Merit Certificates for their poems, essays, and short stories. Well done, girls.

Every step I take, every sound I make
I hear voices here and there, I hear them everywhere.
“You’re too skinny”, “you’re too fat”,
“your hair has as much volume as a mat”.
“You’re way too short”, “way too tall” but how could I be all?
How can I fix this? How can I fix that?
I cut my hair. change my face.
Who am I, without a place?
I am me, you are you. So why tell me what to do?
I want to be known for who I am, not who I pretend to be.
I am the little girl with blue eyes and a strange face.
All I want is to feel free,
Who am I, if I’m not me?
Mrs G was thrilled with the results of the nine Micklefield girls who did a drama exam through Trinity College, as they all received a Distinction. This a great achievement and the girls can all justifiably be proud of themselves.

We are proud of the achievements of our music students this past year. The girls have achieved so much at school: music concerts, assembly performances and school events; and externally: Trinity College examinations (Practical and Theory), Cape Town Eisteddfod, Kaapse Afrikaanse Eisteddfod (KAE) and the Western Cape Virtual Eisteddfod (WCVE). Our students have performed their solos on the following instruments: piano, violin, cello, flute, recorder and voice. Our new singing teacher, Babette Viljoen, has raised the bar significantly in our music department this year. Some of our highlights included:
Our violinist: Mohini Naidoo being awarded a silver medal at the KAE Prize Winners’ Concert. We were also proud of our Flute and Recorder Ensembles’ performances, as well that of our Recorder Duet and Trio stars. Well done to all our talented musicians and their wonderful teachers.

From coding adventures to multimedia presentations, our girls have been busy honing their digital skills and unleashing their creativity.
Our Grade 1s embarked on an exciting journey into the world of coding using Tynker. They diligently worked on their coding skills and successfully earned their Ocean Odyssey level Certificates. It’s inspiring to see our youngest learners embrace technology with such enthusiasm and determination.
The Grade 2s showcased their artistic flair by creating beautiful presentations on Canva. Focusing on a celebration theme, they explored the various features of Canva to bring their ideas to life. The resulting presentations are not only visually stunning but a testament to our girls’ creativity.
In Grade 3, the class utilised Canva to produce well-thought-out posters advertising a healthy lunchbox. They not only implemented the art of graphic design but also applied their knowledge in creating an advertisement for a healthy lunchbox choice using iMovie. This project demonstrated their understanding of different types of shots and the power of visual storytelling.
Our Grade 4 girls became superheroes of the digital world by creating comic books on Book Creator. Their focus was on becoming “Super Upstanders” online, promoting positive behavior and responsible internet use. Additionally, they delved into the realm of Google Forms, creating surveys collaboratively with their partners on topics learned during the term.
Grade 5 took on the challenge of becoming weather reporters. They not only wrote scripts for their weather reports but also dived into video editing using Canva. The result? Engaging and informative weather report videos that showcased their writing skills and technical prowess.
Grade 6 students experienced a bit of everything this term. From discussions on Digital Citizenship, including social media awareness, to hands-on activities in coding and robotics, they broadened their technological horizons.
The Grade 7 yearbook was the focus for the Grade 7s, where they spent time taking a trip down memory lane, selecting their favourite photos for their pages. On Canva they were able to personalise their page and reflect on their time at Micklefield.
The Grade 00 girls have had a fabulous, fun-filled, busy Term 4. They began the term with their Spring Theme. They learnt about Life Cycles and loved watching their silkworms and bean plants grow. This was followed by the Fairies and Princesses Theme and then their Christmas Theme.
A highlight of Term 4 was their trip to the Cape Town Aquarium with their Grade 7 big girls. It was a glorious day and the girls, big and small, had lots of fun.
Twilight Tales was a magical and enchanting evening with brilliant storytelling by Gilly Southwood. Mrs Riley and Mrs Zizi wish these special girls only the best for the years to come.
This term the Grade 0 girls have been exploring Spring and Life Cycles. They raised their our own silkworms from eggs to moths; had a visit from some tadpoles at different stages of metamorphosis; grew their own Grass Heads and had to take responsibility for watering them everyday! From all their observations they were able to apply their knowledge of sequencing through art and flow maps.
Frans the Science Guy did a very exciting workshop with the girls. Science is a little like magic at this age. They made their very own snow and grew VERY long slimy worms!
The girls have had a wonderful time role-playing and engaging in fantasy play through their Fairy Tale Theme. They have learnt that the best qualities of a true princess are kindness, love, and respect. A wonderful evening of Twilight Tales of dress-up, dancing, feasting and storytelling was very much enjoyed by all.
Families were invited to watch a special showcase of what the Grade 00 and 0s get up to in their music lessons. The girls showed off their rhythm, voices, percussion playing as well as their dance moves. We like to move it, move it!
A final theme of celebrations has given a respect for other religions. The girls have enjoyed learning about other’s celebrations and have had many discussions on how the celebrations are somewhat similar in spirit, with an emphasis on giving to those less fortunate, love for each other, and spending time with family and friends.
The Grade 1s were so excited to welcome their parents to school for our Open Day. They started with their recorder concert, followed by singing and a drama production about two little unicorns who longed to be “grown up” but then realised what fun it was to still be young! Thank you to all the parents who came to support us.
It has been a busy term of learning and fun for the Grade 2s. Mrs Meredith returned from her long leave. We thank Miss Kerven for all she did while Mrs Meredith was away. We learnt about Money this term, and researched and collated information on Celebrations around the World. We even wrote down all the goals we wanted to achieve.
The Grade 2s went to the Cape Town Science Centre to learn about transport and explore the centre’s wide range of activities. The girls absolutely loved the Science Show as they sat on the edge of their seats in anticipation of what may happen next!
There was great ‘gees’ all around as we dressed up in our Green and Gold in support of the Bokke and Proteas.
The Grade 3s enjoyed a morning exploring an urban farm in the city centre. Oranjezicht City Farm grows organic, seasonal produce and provides space for city dwellers to grow vegetables and herbs. The highlight of the morning was spending some time playing in the park.
The Grade 2s and 3s went strawberry picking at the Helderberg Farm. They picked delicious strawberries and took a lovely walk around the farm, exploring all the natural beauty.
The Grade 1 girls have been learning about sea creatures and spent a wonderful morning finding creatures in the rock pools of Flora Bay. They ended off with a picnic on the beach and had lots of fun splashing in the sea with their friends.
The Micklefield community of pupils, parents and grandparents were treated to a little peek into the life of a very special Micklefield bear. Inspired by the little teddy in Grade 00, our Foundation Phase concert followed the journey of a Micklefield girl searching for the Best Birthday Ever and learning some important lessons along the way. Mickayla Bear’s Birthday Extravaganza was a celebration of tradition and ritual, but above all, the importance of the people in your life that love you and care for you.
The Grade 4s’ much anticipated annual market day was a great success. They learnt about target markets, profits, teamwork and attracting customers. What a fantastic learning, creative, and fun experience!
Jeanine Amsel, from Club Electron facilitated a workshop with the girls that delved into electrical circuits. They studied the flow of energy and the components of electrical circuits. The girls also learnt how dangerous short circuits could be and how we could prevent building short circuits in future.
The girls enjoyed some healthy competition by getting in pairs and designing a catapult using materials found around the house. The girls demonstrated a good understanding of the design process and explored the concept of kinetic VS stored energy.
The Grade 6s visited the District Six Museum and were given a tour of the museum by two ex-residents of the area who shared their experiences (and tears) of the forced removals during the Apartheid era. They were able to get a glimpse into life during the 1960s; down to the patterned newspaper dollies that adorned the cabinets of some homes. It was certainly an informative and thought-provoking visit.
Our second part of the day was a visit from one of the Grade 6 girl’s relatives. Mr Mohamed shared his experience as a 10 year old boy, District Six resident, who arrived from school to find his family’s household belongings being packed into a truck. Having been given 24 hours to vacate their childhood home, we were taken on this journey with him. We thank Mr Mohamed for his time and providing us with such a unique opportunity to engage with him.
This year’s outing to the Heart Museum at Groote Schuur did not disappoint. We watched a documentary on Christian Barnard and appreciated the well-crafted figures from Madame Tussauds, with the stories to go with them. The visit was certainly informative and nothing short of awe- inspiring.
The Social Entrepreneurship Project is a highlight of the Grade 6 year, with this year as no exception. The girls have worked tirelessly to raise funds for each of their organisations and their efforts have paid off in more ways than one. They will walk into Grade 7 with a greater understanding of life in the broader community, and knowing that, no matter how big or small, they can always make a difference. Well done to each girl!
This term, four Grade 7 girls were chosen to take part in the annual maths relay, hosted by Micklefield. Teams consisted of four pupils from schools in the area. Once we were seated in our teams, the pupils soon bonded with their team members, excited to see what challenges lay ahead. Questions were scaffolded with difficulty levels that would give us a certain number of points. After thirty minutes we all had a break and enjoyed doughnuts and juice. Back in the hall, we were given an additional twenty minutes. We were very proud that Jamie Henchie was in the team that came first. The Maths Relay was a happy, bonding experience where we all enjoyed learning other schools’ maths methods. I am so grateful I got to participate in the remarkable event that was created by Micklefield staff. Written by Dani Barrow
Last week Friday, the 24th of November, the Grade 7s went on an excursion to Dalebrook, Kalk Bay. We had been looking forward to this annual outing ever since it was first mentioned. We came to school ready to hit the waves and examine and identify a wide variety of sea creatures in the Spray Zone, which is one of the sectors of the Intertidal Zones. We were fortunate to have Emma-Beth Peters, a Micklefield old girl, to educate us on the Intertidal Zones and the marine organisms that live in the tidal pools. We cooled off in the tidal pool and then headed off straight to ‘Lekker’ to enjoy a bite to eat. Written by Simrah Ally
On Tuesday, the 28th of November, the Grade 7s performed their house plays which they wrote and directed themselves. The theme that Mrs G gave us was ‘The Road Less Travelled’. We had to produce a play around this theme that would entertain our Intermediate Phase audience. All three plays were amazing and the acting was superb. You could see that the Grade 7s put a lot of effort into their productions, and it certainly paid off. Well done Grade 7s!

The awards were as follows:
The Swallows House Captains hosted a Red Carpet Day on the day of the Grade 7 House Plays premiere. The day started bright and early as everyone arrived in glamorous outfits, some in the most stunning dresses to the fanciest clothes. Everyone was glammed up to watch the premiere . As they entered the hall they walked the red carpet and everyone looked absolutely fabulous! They were also given lollipops to add to the fun of the day. The day was so much fun and everyone looked like Micklefield celebrities. Written by Leah Prins
On Saturday, 25 November the Grade 7s rocked up at school ready to dance the night away. We all looked absolutely stunning in our outfits! It lifted our spirits to see how much effort our parents had put into making it ready for us. Once we sat down we admired our beautiful Olivia Sieff bracelets that Debbie Barrow kindly presented to us, and then it was time for the speeches. We enjoyed a glorious meal of lamb, chicken, potatoes and some wonderful salads. Afterwards we danced the night away to wonderful tunes chosen by the class and played by our fabulous DJ, Mpumzi. We thank all our staff and teachers for making this an unforgettable experience and for guiding us so well throughout our years at Micklefield. Written by Hanna McDavid
The Grade 7 Barbie Dolls took on the Teacher Emoji’s for the traditional game of Rounders. There was lots of action and high spirits with the Grade 7s winning the day. Well done girls!
Farewell to the Class of 2023! We are so proud of each one of you and all that you have achieved in your primary school years. We wish you everything of the best as you embark on your High School journey. Do keep in touch and remember that you are always welcome back at Micklefield.
